Dealership visit frequency?

47k miles. One visit at 19k or so to try and get my steering rack bushings replaced after off roading. Second visit for my guages not properly working, dealer blamed my double ground wires next to the air box, ended up needing to replace my speedo calibrator. Dealers fault for 1 time missing my oil fill cap after an oil change and the 2nd time because the dealer didn't tighten my oil drain plug all the way after a change.

 

It’s really not rocket science... just pay a little bit of attention... come on guys,it’s your job... boggles my mind how they fuck up oil changes. TWICE in your case. Monday morning or Friday afternoon oil changes? Lol

 

2017 SR5 24.5k miles. 5 unscheduled dealer visits
1. Coolant leak - cracked head
2. Oil leak - dealership “found no leak”
3. Oil leak - go to a different dealership, replace valve cover gasket
4. Oil leak - cam tower leak (they did both sides)
5. Tow hooks loose/ fell off - just assuming they took the TRD skip plate off when they did the cam tower leak and didnt tigten the tow hooks up.

 

You took a beating. That’s excessive for such low miles. I would be pissed.

 

Exception that proves the rule? Or maybe just a Monday truck..?

 

Believe me i was beyond pissed! Pretty sure corperate new my name and number by heart..eventually they got it all figured out. And i do know it was built in December, so im thinking maybe around Christmas shut down?

I work in at a auto plant in the repair area, so i experience first hand what happens when there is about to be a shutdown or when it comes to Fridays/ Mondays.

 

2007 SR5, 90606 miles
Dealer...twice. Never for repair work. First time was for an oil change fpr scheduled maintenance and dealer decided to do the Smart Stop flash without asking me. 2nd.......to have LotsofToys install my OME setup and alignment. Technically not repair work. Very fortunate so far I guess![/QUOTE]

 

2016 Tundra - 28k miles

5k miles - Replace both grab handles and cover plugs (they warrantied the driver-side handle I added) (warranty)

10k miles - Replace whole upper dash due to manufacturing imperfections, had rough ridges and I was not happy with the finish. Also replaced auto climate control panel and rear dome light (warranty)

15k miles - Rear bumper bracket recall

18k miles - Had the alcohol density issue (reading 80% alcohol). It was winter time and I had multiple crank but no starts with my Tundra. And when it did start it idled at 500 rpms and ran very rough. It would shake the whole truck.
It finally tripped the CEL and I took the truck in and my Tundra was at the dealer for a week, did ECU update and reset sensor. Also installed new battery (warranty)

2014 Tundra (7" BDS lift and 35" Mud grapplers) - 30k miles when I traded it in

5k - replaced front door panels and seat trim due to green spots (warranty)

10k - replaced both CV axles (warranty)

30k miles - Had issue with brake pedal going to the floor, aka no brakes, if I let off and depressed again it'd brake. Felt like a master cylinder issue to me, but they didn't warranty it. (I could replicate and I did for the tech), dealer said it was "Normal"

I traded that truck in for my Platinum after they would not warranty it.

I really like my 2016 Platinum and my dealership has been great to work with (except for the brake issue with my 2014 Tundra). My family has been doing business with them for over 20+ years, so I am fortunate that they take care of us.

 

2016 @33,000 miles and no warranty issues. only regular scheduled maintenance. I did, however, have the windshield replaced, but that was due to a rock that i picked up on the freeway.

 

Besides the factory maintenance, 1. That one was done during a maintenance visit as well though.
Check engine light came on due to a lockable gas cap....

 

23k 0 visits. Need to go in for radio update reflash. Not sure but I may also have a airbag recall. Can’t remember if it was for my wife’s car or both of ours. I’ve got the reminder, I need to look at it again. Other than that flawless! There is an a day that goes by that I don’t love my truck. I think about it like it’s my fantasy girl and I have the privilege of having it.

Edit: I forgot the clock spring shit the bed. Only realized it when my horn would not work. They replaced it and I was out of there in under an hour. I don’t feel like that was a major issue to me. Just something that happens. Whether it was a defective part or installed improperly. No big deal.

 

2017 SR5 TRD offroad- 7,0XX miles no dealship visits other than to pick up parts

 

2013 5.7 Crewmax, 63,000 on the clock. I've gone in three times for service. First time was for an oil change right after buying the truck (didn't have my MotivX tools yet). Second time was for an alignment after leveling it. Third time was for cam tower repair under warranty. I have all of the service records for the truck and the p.o. went to the dealership for regular scheduled maintenance, it was a lease. The only unscheduled service he had done was an alcohol sensor recalibtration.

 

Mine is skewed because I really hate taking things to the dealership. I have only taken it in to the dealership for repair once. Everything else I did myself when I put my ADS shocks and UCAs on.

2013 CrewMax FFV. 65,000 miles.

1. 14,000 miles Cam Tower leak.
The following I discovered right when I put my ADS system on. My truck had started making a popping sound turning at low speeds prior to the installation.
2. 39,000 miles - front left shock bad.
3. 39,000 miles - upper ball joints were shot.
4. My lower ball joints have been seeping for about 15,000 miles now.

I also replaced the driver's side needle bearing in the front diff housing chasing a noise that I thought was the front end going south. It turns out that it was just my tires (BFG KO2s get LOUD if they start to wear unevenly). So, we won't count that one.

Not a terrible track record, I guess - but nothing like my 4Runners. 2005 V8 went 110,000 miles with no dealer visits (I did all of the maintenance including the timing belt/water pump/etc). Our 2016 4Runner has about 25K on it and it hasn't required any dealer visits.

 

35k on the clock.

1. Hamster wheel squeak from the HVAC blower motor. Replaced under warranty.
2. Reed type noise coming from window seals. Both front window seals replaced and windscreen pulled and resealed. Completed under warranty.
3. Wind blowing in from rear widow. Rear window seal replaced under warranty.

Freeman Toyota has been fantastic to work with.

2016 22,000 miles 0 visits...

 

I have 13,000 on mine! I bring mine in for the free 2 year oil changes,, also for the 5000 mile tire rotations. No warranty issues!

Question, do most of you do your own oil and filter changes after the free 2 year thing or do you take it elsewhere besides the dealer!

I bring to my dealer every 5k, I just double check their work. Less than $70 for an oil change with a wash and sometimes vacuum, plus rotating 37's.

 

I did the free oil change thing twice. I had never let anybody change my oil on any of my vehicles before that (except one time after I had shoulder surgery and I physically couldn't remove a skid plate on a 4Runner). Anyway, with my Tundra, I found out that instead of properly funneling the oil away from my aftermarket skid plates, the techs would just pull the plug and let oil drain all over the plates. Then they would wash the truck so that they could try and cover up what they did. I thought the car wash was just good service. I was wrong. I noticed an oil leak after the second change and found out that it was just all over my skid plates because they were too lazy to remove the plates, or just use a funnel like I do.

I avoid taking my vehicles to the dealership if possible. If it is a big ticket item covered under warranty (like my cam tower leak), then I will take it in. For bigger items like that, they will usually put their "better" techs on it. Oil changes tend to go to the new guys. If it is out of warranty - I just do the work myself. Then I know it was done correctly.

 

How do you go about using that funnel? Last change that oil came out so fast it was all over everything. I’ve considered the Fumoto but if you have had success containing the oil by using a funnel I may try that. It just seems like a funnel might splash all over to or not be able to keep up.

 

I don’t even use the free changes. I’ve had nothing but bad luck from over tightened drain bolts and filter housings to oil all over my leather. You name it, they have screwed it up.

I think I will start doing it, I used too years back and just got lazy!

Is there a thread in here on the best oils, filters and all tools needed to do this, If so I will go get whats recommended here!

Any advice and recommendations on tools etc... needed, I did see something back about a valve and tube! Also is there places you can take old oil, thanks all!

 

Thats how Ive been the last few year! Also just got lazy and figured the cost was the same!

 

I use an old Prestone radiator funnel. I have to bend it fairly significantly to get it into position between the oil pan and the skid plate (I have BudBuilt skids). I have to make sure that I hold the funnel up against the pan at the correct angle, or the oil does spill out over the top a little. I think that the kicker is that you have to use a funnel that has a large exit hole (like my radiator funnel). If you use one that is too small, the funnel will fill up quickly and overflow - as you mentioned that oil comes out at a pretty high rate.

 

Best oil is a matter of opinion. Just use something that meets manufacturer specs (or a slightly heavier weight, which the manufacturer says is ok). I usually run Mobil-1 full synthetic 0W-20, but am experimenting with Castrol 0W-30 this oil change. I am going to do a comparison with wear between the two based on oil analysis results.

Best filters - just use OEM filters.

You can take used oil to Autozone. Also, a lot of landfills usually have a place where you can dump oil into containers.

Tools - get the Toyota filter wrench. I can't remember the part number, but many have posted it.

 

I keep them and I fill out a log book. Do you change your own?
I’ve wondered if they will hassle you on it.
The dealers IMO are sub par and I don’t trust them.
