I normally fill up at Costco, but today I saw this little sign while filling up at Exxon.

Anyone else seen this before? Is it true that Costco gas isn't recommended by Toyota, or just a marketing plot by Exxon?

Yeah, go to the website. It lists Costco as a retailer of Top Tier.

Yeah I saw that as well. Perhaps the sign was from before Costco qualified as top tier?

Costco has marked the “top tier” brand for years. Costco tanks are generally newer and they go through the gas. It’s also about 15-20 cents cheaper per gallon in my area. Looks like a terrible marketing ploy to justify the higher prices. Some soccer mom will read it and believe it.

    Not nearly enough room here!
Everytime, without fail, untill my Wife figured out what was happening, her 04 Pilot would misfire on Costco gas. That vehicle is now my commuter-turd. With over 345,000 miles, on stock engine, transmission and radiator, it deserves the gas it likes!

Sounds like a great way to get sued at the corporate level.

I was unaware of this. Most of the time I fill up at Sams club, which apparently doesn't have top tier gas.

That must be old information and is misleading for them to display.

Here is a link to Top Tier brands currently: https://www.toptiergas.com/licensedbrands/

Costco gas is Top Tier and has been for as long as I can recall seeing the Top Tier logo.

Been using Costco gas for years in my Tundra. No problems. I know it's fresh as my local Costco gets multiple delivers a day.

Edit: Also know they keep the filters clean at the pumps. I see them changed all the time. Never once have I seen a filter being changed at any other brand. Who knows, maybe other brands don't have filters at the pumps.

Costco and Safewway regular gas in my truck. Shell regular if I need gas and a Costco or Safeway is available.

Costco or Shell premium for my lawnmower and boat, depending which is more convenient.

Never had a problem with any of it.

I left 3/4 tank full of Shell premium in my lawnmower from last October 2017 until mid-May 2018. The mower sat through the winter, simply shoved under my back patio steps, covered in snow in temps dropping to -45 Celsius. It fired up in May with 5 primer button pushes and 4 pulls on the cord. Not bad for a $200 mower. :D

Costco is solid gasoline. I use their 91 and my Tundra gets better mileage then when I use the cheap stations' 91

BS marketing on their part. They put in there half-truths to get what they want. Most people go for the cheapest and best fuel possible and Costco meets those needs. Rest assure that they intended to target Costco, and not all those names that I've never heard of. Put it in the middle, so the propaganda sounds legit.

I am under the impression that gas is also wholesaled as it ages to some of the offbrand retailers. It still meets the octane requirements etc., but it has been sitting for awhile.

I've heard that rumor as well but until someone has hard evidence of it, I find it to be bunk.

Costco purchases their fuel in massive, bulk quantities. Since it is only sold at their stations, they can sell it for less than most other resellers. If Costco had poor quality fuels, with the quantity that they sell, I can guarantee that it would be known and their business would decline. I avoid filling up on weekends there, just due to the lines.
