The worst part about hand injuries is not being able to have sex for a while.

They grafted some skin from his arm and wrapped it around his thumb end. He was told that he would not get this nail back but that it would grow outward some.

    Ouch!

Yep, when fitting 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb day, incidents tend to happen! Been there, done that!

Buddy of mine we call “pokey” now, lost the tip of his middle finger in a grinder accident, now he has a single small fingernail that grows...imagine a cats claw and you’ll get an idea of exactly how it looks, and why we call him “pokey” LOL

Speedy recovery, hope all turns out well, buddy!

Friends sister got her finger degloved. She was tying a horse to a fence to brush it and the dog scared the horse causing it to rear up and got her finger in the rope. I picked up the finger and applied a tourniquet. Lots of capillaries in the feet, hands and face. Lots of blood in minor injuries.

Visit to the plastic surgeon went well today, and I didn’t leave looking like Dolly Parton. Whew.

The guy was hilarious, I had to listen to a rather loud clipping noise at one point, that he told me wasn’t important, just after he was talking about Gordon Ramsey and cleavers. All trimmed up, stitched closed as much as possible, and bandaged. Hurting worse now though. Ended up losing less than expected, basically just the last 1/2 inch.

Keep it elevated. Hurts more now cause it's sowed tight. Slow movements so not to rip open. Take a pain pill now. I am sure he numbed the area, that's gonna wear off soon if it hasn't already.

    Good luck

If they gave you pain meds Phil, take them 1/2h-1h before the scheduled dressing change, if not, then a couple of Extra Strength Tylenol. Unwind gauze until you get to the stuff that’s stuck. Soak your fingers in a sterile specimen container full of normal saline to loosen the stuck gauze off. Remove the gauze, dump the saline, refill with fresh saline and bathe it for about 30s each finger, that effectively cleans any surface bacteria while being gentle on healing surface cells. Re-dress/gauze as ordered.

Don’t let any care provider touch that area unless their hands are thoroughly washed.

Yup, local freezing long worn off, it’s elevated, and I’ve been eating T3s and advil as frequntly as allowed. Pain is in waves now, so i have something to look forward when it’s bad.

Awesome, that's the wound care specialist in me talking, she would probably concur that method is the most painless aseptic way to do it, short of irrigating with a large syringe. God speed to recovery man.

Well, despite both of these pieces of great advice being followed, the dressing change was a nightmare. Wife couldn’t believe how badly the dressing stuck, and how much saline soaking it took to loosen things up, and talk about PAIN during all that.

Pain level is not bad most of the time, but it comes in waves. When it’s there the T3’s and advil don’t do much, but then it settles back to almost nothing until the next time. Thankfully the waves of pain are fairly short lived.

Have a follow-up appt. with the surgeon on Thursday. Right now I’m very skeptical of the 4 week return to work time window I was initially given, certainly for my normal duties.

It will take longer to get back to normal work because fingers in the middle of the hand were hurt and you cant grip items as good. I lost the tip of my index finger and was back to work in two days...all i had to do was hold that finger out of the way and use my 3 other fingers to grip tools. Its not easy to hold out your two middle fingers. Doctor told me the easiest finger to get along without is the index finger.
I know what you mean about the dressing sticking! I had to go back to a plastic surgeon and i did not watch what he did and when i went to change the dressing i could not freaking believe they did not use a true oil emulsion dressing..i called that doctors nurse up and chewed her a new one.
I had to go order my own! Could not remember the brand before but i do now and what i used was Xeroform.
