Alright gents I need you opinion. If it doesn't sell in the next few hours I can buy a used TRD dual exhaust with $8k miles on it. Problem is there is a decent amount of surface rust on it and it is too far away to make the decision once I get there. Also seller is nice enough to drive so there's no dealing or saying not interested at the meet. My OEM exhaust looks way better than the TRD exhaust as far as rust is concerned. I would consider trying to clean it up and paint it black, however I don't want to have problems with the rust getting worse and the paint peeling because of it. I just don't have that kind of time.

The tips and muffler look good, but TRD skimped on the tubing, must be poor quality stainless.

For the guys with TRD exhausts, how has yours held up and more importantly, have you tried to paint over the rust and if so, how did it hold up? (Three questions in one)

    Thanks in advance.

Blow it off. Too much doubt. Just my opinion.

Depending on how good of deal it was, I wouldn't worry too much about the surface rust. Clean it up, paint it black and enjoy it. My $.02.

No issues on mine..but we live in different states so humidity may have a factor there

My TRD exhaust pipes - not tips - have light, tightly adhered rust on most surfaces. My Tundra has 8500 miles on it.
If you read Post #12 (first part) in this TT Thread you'll see evidence that the pipes are 409SS:

    http://www.tundratalk.net/forums/tu...-ordered-trd-dual-exhaust-what-did-i-get.html

The NISMO exhaust on the Titan I used to have was 409SS. The pipes looked very much like my TRD's do now.
FWIW, some SS types establish a "protective corrosive layer", then corrode no further. This appeared to be the case with the NISMO system over 5 years.
I never cleaned or painted the NISMO system. The TRD will remain uncleaned/unpainted, as well.
Sorry, I haven't helped you much.
Try a Google search on "Tundra TRD exhaust rust" (or similar) and make your own conclusions.

    Best Regards,

I agree with mdavis, not a big deal. Throw some paint on it and move on. 409ss is a cheaper quality than your 304ss, which is typically used in the exhaust tips and higher end exhaust systems. Good luck
