Check Engine Light and Hissing Noise

    About a month ago my 2005 started making a hissing"ish" noise from engine compartment (I think). About the same time the check engine light came on. I took it to Autozone and they told me the codes said something about the air, like O2 sensor or air filter or 1 other thing. They suggested that I should start with the air filter, being the cheapest fix if it worked. The first day the light came on was very humid here (live in Arkansas). The check engine light stayed off for a couple of weeks and the noise seemed to diminish some. 2 days ago it was very humid and the light came on again and I can hear the noise. I have changed the air filter now and it is still making the noise. I think it might not be as loud but I am not sure. It happens as I push on the accelerator. When I am sitting still or moving. I, like everyone else, want to fix this before it worsens or causes problems, but do not have the extra funds to go to the dealership for their reading of the light. Help please.

    It would probably help if you knew exactly what codes were tripped. Normally they will write them down or print them out for you at the auto parts store if you ask

    Try to find out what p codes are stored. The hissing you describe sounds like some type of vacuum leak. Try to isolate where the noise is coming from. I suggest a good old cheap mechanic’s stethoscope. Listen around the engine compartment without the stethoscope probe connected.

    ok found print out. "P0172-bank system is too rich for a predetermined period of time"

    Let me know add to this. Yesterday I had air filter and oil changed. It sounded better at first, then hours later when I drove home it sounded worse. Last night when it ws driven it sounded worse again. Just now went out to find print out and listen to it again and it is not doing it at all and check engine light is off. Seems to do whatever it is off and on.

    Here are a few things to check:

    What causes the P0172 code?
    • A dirty mass air flow sensor overstating the amount of air entering the engine which may cause excessive fuel delivery
    • A bad oxygen sensor
    • A leaking fuel injector allowing too much fuel to enter the combustion chamber
    • A faulty fuel regulator, which may not be regulating the pressure of the going to the engine as it should
    • A vacuum leak
    • A possible fault in the coolant system such as a stuck thermostat or bad coolant temperature sensor
    • Worn spark plugs
    I would start with cleaning the maf sensor and changing the spark plugs if you haven’t recently. Then replace the O2 sensors if the above doesn’t fix the issue. Good luck.

    Thanks so much everyone, I appreciate you all. Will start with cleaning the MAF this afternoon, and hopefully not work my way too far down the list before it is better :)

    How about the old fashion, starter fluid being sprayed on vacuum lines until you hear the idle change? In the old days that’s how we would find vacuum leaks. Carb and choke cleaner or starter fluid.
