Buying a new truck. Talk me out of buying a F150

Ford owners will say, but i have noise cancellation! It sounds like a V8 inside the cab, once they open the door, it sounds like a ricer....

 

Guy I work with put aftermarket exhaust on his V6 Mustang. They told him that you will never get V8 sound out of a V6

 

The only F150 I'd consider would be the 5.0, I know multiple guys that have no issues with their 5.0 V8s. I would not buy the ecoboost, few of my friends had them and they have since moved to a different truck. The ecoboosts are quick trucks, but long term reliability seems patchy.

I really like the Tundra in the half ton segment, it's tried and true. I've had 4 Tundra's and none of them have had any major issues. That said it gets poor fuel economy compared to other half ton trucks. I'd go GM half ton before I went to an F150 though, the 5.3 gets very impressive MPG for a V8 and the 6.2 is a stout motor that gets respectable fuel economy (runs on premium though, so costs more per mile).

 

I'd rather have a hemorrhoid removed with a sawzall that own a Ford.

 

I recently bought my 1st tundra. In the past, I had Chevys (88,99,'05) and currently have a '98 chevy k1500, which i love for the woods. (This is all being said in the interest of full disclosure). After the '05 chevy, I bought a '11 F350. It was a terrible truck. I have a list as long as both arms of things I had to repair on that truck, due to bad design on the ford engineers part. For instance, I had an upper intake boot burst 300 miles from the house, and lost all boost....FOR 300 MILES. When i got home, i went to pick one up and they told me it was $194, which included things i didnt need, but ford didnt sell separately. I asked the service guy if they were planning on changing the design to fix it. He said, "No, we just keep changing em. Been changing 8-10 of em a year, for a few years." It was always something like that with FMC. So, a few months ago I bought a tundra. Time will tell, but at least i dont get that pounding sensation in my back side, every time I get in it. Also, I have a tractor setup, which weighs about 10,200 lbs., and the Tundra pulls it with no issue. This is the 1st truck that I can tell a difference in, when I push the tow/haul button. 5k miles and im satisfied, so far. I know that I'm talking about a ford diesel, in place of an F150, but the whole "birds of a feather" adage comes to mind.

I was on that site as a vendor. What a joke. The only traffic on there is people trying to figure out what's wrong with their piece of crap Ford.

 

And yet, people keep buying that shit. Makes no since to me. I guess they think they are more American by buying Ford, but they don't realize, Tundra is more American than Ford.

 

Hi, New here. Just traded in my 15 F150 for a Tundra. Owned the 4x4 3.5 for 2 1\2 years, bought brand new. The truck spent 27 days total in the shop. Replaced both IWE asemblies, reprogrammed the trans, water leak which took forever to find (replaced back window and entire carpet). Only 37k on the odometer and I took great care of it. The last week I knew another of the IWE went, but didn't bother fixing.

Got a decent deal on a 2016 SR5. Happy to be here.

 

I agree that is very impressive for a V8 however when I test drove it compared to the Tundra Ram and Ford 5.XL V8s it felt very sluggish in comparison. Then again maybe that is why they have impressive FE numbers on the 5.3.

I haven't read all the other posts yet, but I must say, I think I just talked my future self out of buying a ford.

 

Just test drive the hell out of both vehicles and pick the one you like the best. The tundra is a proven truck with excellent reliability, but is not on par with the technology advancements that other trucks have. I sold my Tundra last year and have yet to replace it. I wanted something with more features such as, push button start, Apple Car Play, 360 camera, etc. I can't decide on what I want, I am all over the place. My list is as follows:

2019 F150 Lariat
2019 F250 Lariat
2019 Jeep JL Rubicon
2019 Sierra AT4

Then there are the last two, that are at the bottom of my list...

2019 Tundra TRD Pro
2019 Tacoma OR


Hopefully I can decide in the next couple of months. I am just waiting for the 2019 Sierra and 2019 Tundra to check out. Out of all the vehicles, the F250 is actually my favorite. Although I do not tow anything really, I like the larger truck. I would turn it into an expo offroad rig. The Jeep JL comes in second. We shall see where I end up.

All in all, pick the one you like the most. Don't worry to much about the things you cannot control such as reliability. You never know what problems you will have later on after a vehicle purchase. It comes down to luck IMO. I never had a single problem with my Tundra, it was just time for a change. Plus, it was a huge money pit with all the aftermarket parts. lol

 

IMO that's like saying playing slots at the casino is just luck. It's not "Just" luck - the odds are stacked against you. If you buy a truck with low reliability scores it isn't "Guaranteed" that you'll have problems, but it is an indicator that there is an increase in the likelihood of issues. Tundras arent bullet proof, but the issues seem to be fewer and further between than the other manufactures... especially in regards to problems that require long or frequent visits to the mechanic.

thats just my thoughts though. At the end of the day, you are right - just get what you want. I'd urge you to consider all factors and determine those that are most important to you.

 

1/2 ton, it'll always be a Tundra for me, if I had to pull more I'd get a 2500HD maybe break the bank Denali Duramax... ok I'm dreaming. But never Ford, that be a nightmare.

 

If you're looking at the Tech stack and that's a priority, there are many other makes out there for sure. I've had them, I love tech, but every manufacturer is really really bad at software User Testing and have ZERO, absolutely zero product support. When you produce a product (Software) that is performing a function/service you need a support model behind it. None of them do, and they all have glitches that i'm just not willing to deal with anymore especially considering the price point.

I finally came around to the Toyota way of thinking due to the simplicity, it's a truck, it acts like a truck, it's not trying to be a car or something it's not. I may be in the minority, or maybe I've just finally just had enough of the BS, it's been a slow spiral with the big three. BTW, I decided to get a new Titan 6 months ago. Great Engine, too many gears (Like most) finicky tech stack...it's gone.

I've had GM's, Fords, Rams, and the Titan in the last 6 years. All have too many bells and whistles and no support.

Side note, buddy has a new F150 5.0...it's back in the shop due to touch screen locking up etc AGAIN

If I had to go back to a 3/4 or 1 ton, it would probably be a GM, Ram has totally screwed up the Cummins with a crappy torque management system that tried to kill me a few times...

 

And... you can always add the tech stack after the fact. It's "easier" just buying the truck with it... but if you go with aftermarket you aren't forced to a certain brand the manufacture/dealer has a relationship with. and you can get all the things you want.

Edit: the one thing I like about the Toyota, the tech stack isn't integrated with the essential functions of the truck. Things like HVAC, truck settings/menu's etc. If the head unit implodes, you can still use your truck like normal. the big three...not so much.

 

Ford = "Fix or repair daily" Tundra's haven't drastically changed, but don't fix what not's broken

 

80 MPH at 1800 RPM, 23 MPG, dont mind if i do.

the ecoboost doesnt hold a candle to tundra, you can have all the tech in the world tied to that motor i still wouldnt buy it. but the 5.0 changes everything, the F150 really pulls out ahead.

this 2018 KR has 3.31 rear, 5.0, and has been trouble free for 6 months (imagine that). only time will tell the rest of the story...

 

Slap 35's on that like most of us do and you'll wish you had 4.30's
