So I pull an 18ft trailer at times - vehicles, tractors, atv’s etc. In the last few times of pulling I’m getting the attached error message on the display. I am thinking the trailer wiring may have a short or something as it comes and goes randomly. Anyone else have experience with this.

I believe another member had this issue and it ended up being fixed by bending a connector pin that wasnt making contact. Another member may know who posted it.

Thank you, I’m horrible about searching topics. I will take a look and see if I see anything here as well.

I got the same warning message at approximately 50,000 miles and I haven’t ever towed anything. Dealer first claimed it was the trailer brake controller module (the one in the dash). They replaced it but couldn’t get it to talk to the main module. Eventually, they claimed they had to replace the right rear TPS and wheel bearing. They claimed the wheel bearing had nearly seized and that the resultant heat had fried the TPS. Sounded like complete BS to me. I feel my hubs/wheels regularly for excess heat after driving (never had any). This occured very soon after I had the same dealer do a complete 4-wheel brake job. I suspect they screwed up the TPS when they were doing the brake job. In any event, once they replaced the TPS (and supposedly the wheel bearing), they were able to get everything communicating and the warning message was cleared. I’m not convinced it was ever the trailer brake module but it was all under warranty so all it cost me was time and aggravation. No problems at all in the 5000 miles since. I guess it sounds weird that I touch my truck’s hubs all the time. She also likes it when I stroke her fenders.

I'm fed up with the onboard controller. I am going to put an aftermarket one in. I've been towing a tractor for the last few days and that message is driving me nuts and is now coming up more and more often. I read on another tundra forum that there are tons of people with this issue dating back to 2016 and it appears Toyota has done nothing to rectify the situation. I haven't research enough on Toyota doing anything yet but there doesn't seem to be much response from what I have seen.

Rip it out and install a Tekonsha P3 Electronic Brake Control. Best thing I did for towing. Works 10x better than the stock controller. Someone here sells dash panels to make it look almost stock. I got mine from another member. Only thing I miss is the info on the dash, but really once you get it dialed in it's good.

I had the same issue. Got the Tekonsha P3, still had same issue. Finally the RV dealer took my truck and trailer for a 30 min test drive. Found a bad wheel magnet. Only failed when hot.
I do miss the readout on the info screen but the Tekonsha is by far a better controller.
