    Hello Everyone,

In the market for a car for the teenage daughter. Was at the dealership this weekend and they had a C-HR that caught our eye. Kinda sporty looking with safety features and a halfway decent sticker price. Has anyone had any experience with this model?

My wife has a blue premium model. Loves it. Gets 34.4 mpg, has plenty of room for her and the rear seats fold down to make it a hatchish. It's been extremely reliable with just regular maintenance and the premium model has heated seats, dual zone climate control, etc. Only downfall is no Nav, no leather, and no Satellite radio. 2 of these which can be fixed with an aftermarket head unit and the seats really aren't bad.

Anything specific you want to know?

I will say this though... The headlights on that thing are awesome. Better than my $50k TRD Pro. Which i find very irritating.

Since I know nothing about it and was not even on my radar before this weekend, any input is appreciated. Also satisfaction factor. You mention that your wife loves it and that's a good thing. How long has she had it?
    Thanks,

Going on 10 months I think. Just went in for the 5k, but she drives in town everyday. We have not needed to fix anything, which is not surprising. The C-HR is a global vehicles., meaning Toyota makes a variation for a bunch of markets, so quite a bit of attention is put on quality. Definitely not a content heavy vehicle like a corolla, but the NVH in the C-HR is worlds better than a Corolla. She likes the fact that it's like a crossover and sits a little higher which makes her feel safer, but still gets ridiculously good mileage. If I needed a daily, I would also own one. As mentioned, you can package a corolla with all the Tech, which she had prior to the CH-R, but she prefers the C-HR, since it "feels" like a nicer car even though it has less content.

    We highly recommend it.

I have looked at it also (I also have a teenage daughter). The only thing I did not like is that the view is a little blocked back around the C-pillars. Not a serious problem if you use your mirrors and backup camera though.
Other than that it is my first choice so far. I still have a few months before she gets her license, but I am actively looking.

Yea, I thought about the blind spot as well but think the mirror sensors will take care of that.

@the_midwesterner what does your wife think about the back-up camera in the rear view mirror? We test drove one last night and really like how it drives. The only thing I did not like at all was the back-up camera screen being in the rear view mirror instead of the radio screen. As you all ready mentioned the radio is extremely lame.

I am surprised that it does not have for sat radio. Thought that would be standard on all vehicles it seems like.

The way it was explained to me was that this car was originally slotted for the Scion brand. However, after Toyota ended Scion, they move it to the Toyota brand for the latter part of 2018 model. They put everything in getting the TSS features in it in time for 2018 and sacrificed the radio for timing sake. I was told that the 2019 model going into production in August will have the new Entune 3.0 with Apple Car Play\, nav, and back up camera in the radio.

She thought it was weird at first, but it’s no different than driving any other car with any other option, you eventually get used to it. In my opinion, I prefer it for her to have it there. It makes her use the rear view mirror. Too many people focus on just the screen and never look back, at least this gives her a reason to look there anyway. Also, with RCTA, she will get notified of on-coming vehicles crossing behind her. Also, yes, radio is lame. My wife uses Bluetooth for everything though, so she doesn’t care much. Plus, if we’re driving anywhere together, we either drive the sequoia or the tundra.

I think this is correct, but I need to double check.

How was it? I was told for a sporty looking car it's kinda gutless? Any truth to that?

It's no hot rod, but has appropriate acceleration. Merging onto the interstate, I stomped it to get up to speed. Granted it won't win any quarter miles however, it was more than enough. In my opinion, a perfect match for a teenage driver. I did like the way it drove. It is quite nimble and feels like a sporty car. I think they did a good job of providing an somewhat aggressive look to a low price tag.

C-HR is a great looking vehicle. I was looking at them the only thing that killed it for me was lack of AWD. If Toyota would have offered AWD I would have purchased one over my Nissan Nismo Juke RS. But I dont regret the decision to pick up the Nissan. It has been an absolute riot.

Nice. The guys at the dealership I bought the truck from said it was gutless and couldn't get up to speed well. It looks nice. I get it's not a hot rod, but so long as it accelerated well to freeway speeds then no worries. I wasn't looking to buy but I thought it looked nice and was looking at it when the paperwork was being drawn up for the truck.

They look neat. However, i saw a thread on r/askcarsales or r/Toyota on Reddit about them. Not alot of good reviews. Most people said to just pay a couple grand more and get a Rav4

I originally was thinking the Rav4 but was only interested in the new 2019 re-design. Unfortunately these will not be available until December or January. Also, the daughter did not like the way the Rav4 felt at all.

Went over to read what you were referring to on Reddit. Typical reddit thread in my opion. Our company stopped paying attention to reddit years ago because we felt it was just a whiner board. Nothing ever constructive, just a bunch of whining. I pulled out one post from the middle of the thread that basically sums up my thoughts on the C-HR:

"I wonder if any of the detractors actually drove the car. I went into a dealer out of curiosity to check it out - and it drives shockingly well. It drives nothing like how it looks (read: high cg, typical cross over handling). Steering is quick and direct, and the car is planted. It'll rotate quite well with some left foot braking (but being a toyota, you can't left foot brake for more than 2 seconds at a time before throttle cuts - even with vsc off). It simply handles better than many compacts out there and is entertaining to drive. yes it's slow, but it delivers a feeling of velocity that a car with 140hp has no reason to deliver. It certainly feels better than how it looks on paper. Toyota did a fantastic job on this chassis."

Fair enough. I have no personal experience with the car but I figured other reviews wouldnt hurt although I agree that Reddit is very much a whiner board.

Personally I think its ugly, cramped, hard to see out of and overpriced. Rav-4 is similar money, way more room, faster and easier to see out of.

If you want to stay Toyota and spend less $$$$, there is the Corolla Im wagon. Its kind of dorky, but once again roomier/easier to see out of than the CH-R. My local Toyota dealer was having a fire sale on these, had one up by the door for $15,900 sticker was 18k. There is also a brand new Corolla wagon(replaces the Im) coming out in a few months if you can hold off until then.

Although I don't really like any of the cars in the class the CH-R competes in. Honda H-RV, Ford Eco-sport, Buick Encore, they are all overpriced and too small. Similar money can buy you a Honda CR-V, an Escape, Rav-4 with a couple less options, much roomier cars those are. Or you can save a bunch of $$$$ and just buy something like an Elantra wagon, Kia Soul, Corolla wagon, Mazda 3. SUV's are real trendy now, wagons/sedans aren't and you can get some really good deals on them.

Well the daughter got to make her big choice today. While we started with the C-HR, we kept our options open. This was her thoughts on each:

    • C-HR - Cool looking car, but the radio was beyond bad. Also back hurt on the test drive. Not sure if this was related to the seating or not.
    • Corolla - Very plain looking car and just didn't excite the imagination. No test drive.
    • IM - Too small. Brother didn't fit very well in the back seat. (6' twelve year old).. No test drive
    • Rav4 - Too much of a mom's car. No interest and no Test Drive
    • Prius C - Too small, just like the IM. No test drive.
    • Prius - Hit all the right spots. She really like the looks and thought it drove very well. She fell in love with the model that included the 11.5" head unit (Tesla style). This also had all the safety features including blind spot detection.
With that said, she decided on the Prius 4. After some negotiation, the dealer offered an attracted price and we pulled the trigger.

So I'll stick out my neck here and say I'm one of the few people who think Toyota nailed it with the Prius design. I think it looks great and appropriately weird.
