Rolled over 30k and was thinking I'd get a new air filter. I have had truck about 12k miles and haven't needed to replace it yet. Should I look into a washable filter, I would want dry and no oil, such as AFE pro dry or TRD? or just stick with the regular filter that came with the truck?

Go for the aFe Sean. I like mine, it’s a quality product and fits well.

A little of this and a little of that.

That's a lot of coin for an air filter

I had a K&N in my 2012 Tacoma worked well, used it for 76000 miles.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the TRD filter is an oil one.

Stock air filter works well. If you're only on-road driving, the K&N (and I imagine other washable filters) will work well. I've seen a post in another forum where, during heavy off-road use, a metric boat ton of dirt got past the K&N and into the engine. I have used them in the past, in our motorcycle, just to save on replacing the expensive OEM air filters but I run OEM or equivalent in the Tundra.

I'm in the market as well. I'd steer clear of the Fram air filter for sure. It's 1/2 the thickness and the savings is negligible. Racing air filters don't seem worth the hype in my opinion. Buy what's efficient and durable and of comparable size and function.
In closing, I have zero experience with EcoGuard and I'd guess it's a Chinese duplicate of Denso. It might work great. I will stick with Denso. 35$ every three years or so isn't the end of the world.

I drive on road only, about 10k miles a year, normal conditions and check filter every oil change. I'd prefer the best air filtration over any possible performance gains

Me too. Your area has its fair share of garbage in the air though. California is way worse due to the agriculture (almonds etc).
Your doing everything right, and have a fine truck. Feed her well. Stick with Denso. It’s to infrequent to fuss over and has served you well up to now. Let me find that discount website for ya..

+1 on the AFE. Excellent performance and value. They're a little more money up front but you'll easily recoup that and then some by not having to buy another filter ever again.

Concerning these oily airfilters that don’t need replacing: What happens to all the dirt and debris that gets trapped by the filter during its lifetime? Where does it go? Is it possible to ever fully clean an oily airfilter?

I’d be curious about any additional build up within the throttle body or MAF sensor assembly too. Im sure a few of us follow directions well, but knowing my luck I’d over oil it or not clean it thoroughly enough, not notice damage around the seal, or something else. No, I feel pretty good about it. At $18 bucks, plus the cabin filter at $14.. plus shipping.. under $50 is cheap.

The fact is that the re-usable air filters (K&N, etc) have no performance gains in any case I've seen other than the manufacturers website. The only reason I ran a K&N on our motorcycle (Honda ST1300, sold) is because there wasn't much in the way of air filters other than the OEM when we purchased the bike in 2006. Unfortunately, Honda wanted almost as much as the K&N for their disposable so, for cost reasons, I went with the K&N (and Honda wanted it changed every 12k miles). Never had any issues with it but that was on road use only. They do have to be properly maintained and they must properly dry after washing before re-oiling otherwise effectiveness will be compromised. That is the only reason I can see running a re-usuable/washable air filter on any vehicle, including the Tundra. The disposable filter works well, both OEM and many of the aftermarket (not all of them, though), and they can be had at a reasonable cost.

I would not even consider a re-usable filter for off-road/high dirt use.

I replace my air filter about every 15k miles. They are inexpensive and easy to change.

The oiled filters are coated in a very sticky oil solution and that is what traps the dirt. The cleaning process uses a chemical and water to break down that oil which is then rinsed away. After it fully dries (which, according to K&N, has to be naturally and not through compressed air or heated air) it is re-oiled and then re-installed.

Yes, the cleaning process will remove the trapped contaminates since they are stuck to the oil solution. That being said, the cleaning process can take several hours with all the washing, drying, and re-oiling that has to take place.

I know nothing about the oil-less/dry re-usable filters.

Been using K&N oiled filters since the mid 70's in all kinds conditions. The oil "web" actually prevents even more dust particles from passing thru......Cleaning process takes no longer than an hour tops.

K&N's were specifically designed for dirt/dusty conditions. Used them on dirt bikes and my 4X4s. My brother raced moto back then too. All the dirt bikes had K&Ns. For good reason. I'd go to the sand drags near Florence Oregon and you would rarely see a sand dragger without a K&N.

The K&N for our bike didn't dry very quickly after being washed and that is my experience with K&N. It wasn't that big of a deal but did take a couple of hours or so, depending on the ambient temp. It takes three minutes to change a disposable and that's with a two minute nap in the middle. Since the Tundra's air filter is flat, it might dry much faster than the one for our bike.

The oil does tend to stop more, or at least that's my opinion, until it becomes full and then there is little to stop anything that wants past it. In a desert/sandy off road environment that happens fast which was the case in the thread I mentioned earlier.

I cleaned the one on our bike every 30k miles with no issues and the airbox was always clean. They definitely have their upsides and I'm considering the K&N for our cabin air filter.

I remember cleaning them quite often. But worth the trouble. Yeah, it's important to get it as dry as possible before re-oiling. Actually when they get too dirty and clog up...air flow can get severely restricted. Nothing gets thru. That's worse case scenario. It's just a matter of checking the filter often. Especially if you drive dusty back roads all the time.

When I raced moto-x K+N was my filter of choice, if it was a very dusty track I would put a non-oiled sock over the oiled filter, that way the collected dust/sand would fall off the filter during the race.
