i just bought my first watch. like, ever. dive computers don't count and the rolex was given to me.

as i mentioned above, i've been on the hunt for a good outdoors ABC watch. i dove with suunto electronics for years but apparently watches and dive computers are separate entities for them. i had been eyeing a suunto core but haven't seen any positive mentions in a long time. so, i started looking at g-shocks. this isn't a fashion piece for me. it serves a direct purpose and will be worn when needed.

i found a good deal on a brand new casio mudmaster. it arrived last night and is stupidly overbuilt. it is a japanese import so i had to dig around on the casio support site to find the english manual. the one in the box was all japanese.

first thing i did was change the band. the stock plastic/rubber one was not going to cut it. i found a guy, Jays and Kays, on etsy and am much happier with the band.

    Photo May 03, 11 58 58 AM.jpg

cool stuff about the watch. completely solar powered. i would guess that over half the face is a solar panel. watch also sets itself by communicating to the atomic clock for the region you are in and checks in several times a day. automatic time zone adjustment along with DST. you can set a home city then alternate between it and your current location with a button press. altitude is available with historical recall. barometer is available with historic recall. digital compass but i haven't played with it yet. temperature as well but the reading will only be accurate if it's off your wrist for awhile otherwise it picks up your body heat.

it is massive but wears comfortably. the nylon strap is far better than the stock one. it doesn't feel heavy but you know it's there. so will everyone else.

overall, i'm happy with it. it will serve its purpose and do it well for a very long time. i think i'd have to try very very hard to break it.

I’m going to have to give that some thought. G-Shocks are great watches, but I hate the bands. I hadn’t thought about doing what you did. Yours is really sharp.

    Does it make coffee? :rimshot:

All kidding aside, I wanted the mudmaster and but I wasn't sure if it had a tide chart. The other one I'm considering is Protrek 2500 and I'll eventually decide what to get.

This is the Wenger GST Chrono. I love this watch and have worn it regularly for about 6 years - changing the band twice and the battery once.

I also had it serviced once.

    It needs to be cleaned.

PSA: I was in the Seiko outlet store in Williamsburg, VA this weekend and They will be closing the store this Fall/Winter. They are in the process of thinning their inventory and are offering some very nice discounts up to 70% off. They have some solid everyday wear watches that are definitely worth it. I walked away with several that will satisfy my Seiko collection for some time.

Got this in the mail last week, I wear my Tag at work so this will be my weekend watch. It has altimeter and barometer as well as compass and more. Was wanting a Mud Man G-Shock but got a good deal on this from the company as I think it is being discontinued for newer version.

My dream watch is a submariner, but I can’t fathom spending the coin on one. Especially since I don’t have any kids so leaving to anyone is out of the question.

My daily is this or a suunto core for work

I knew when I joined this group that I had found a home. Not a better group of truck, knife, booze loving hedonists on the net. And now WATCHES!!

You guys have some really nice collections. My most often worn are my Marathon GSAR, Steinhart Ocean ONE and my 2 PAMs (see below). I really like the Shinolas too...I really need to check those out closer. Another fun obsession are the old Soviet made Poljot and Vostok pieces.

Congratulations. My son just graduated from High School and received a similar award: Outstanding Student of the Year award. I also rewarded him with a watch. We got him a Fossil.

I had the opportunity to pick up this Movement watch and know very little about them. Seems' to be a young company out of California with only Quartz movements. However, I cannot find any info on who's movements they use. Does anyone have any details on their internals and quality wise?

MVMT is one of those Alibaba deals where they buy in bulk from China.

"The duo researched watch suppliers in China through Alibaba from their shared Santa Barbara apartment. They talked to about 30 suppliers, asking questions to determine the quality and price points, and they realized that the markup most watch brands added to the wholesale price was staggering."

    https://www.cnbc.com/2016/12/01/how...h-company-that-made-60-million-this-year.html

Basically they're $13 Chinese watches that they market as $300 watches for $100.

Interesting... But hey, good for them. They've sold more than 600,000 watches and made more than 60 mil last year. Not bad for a couple of millennials who dropped out of college. Most of the millennials I interview are useless and entitlement babies. Besides, the quality sounds like to be in line with my cheap Skagan which has kept accurate time for the past 10 years.

LOL, I have been looking for a gunmetal colored watch for a while. I bid on 2 watches on e-bay today, thinking that someone would outbid me on at least one of them, and then I won both. Oh well, can never have too many watches, right. Got both for less than 1/2 of typical retail - the second one actually more like a 1/4. (Not e-bay bogus retail)

I have looked at the MVMT watches and actually like their style. Nice and clean modern lines. I am not a fan of China products just because when I grew up it was cheap junk, but these days with better quality control and market demands the fact that something comes from China does not necessarily equals junk anymore.

I agree. I too like the minimalist looking watch and as you said, is one of MVMTs approaches. I'm a big fan of diver style watches and their Mariner model is tough to keep in stock. Still debating if I'll keep it for it still sitting in the box.
