Anyone have any experience with either of these products? They look similar in function... they both have 300 lb weight rating... both with 3 year / 36k mile warranty... the Trekstep is about $100 less... thoughts? Opinions?

My truck came with the Amp step on it, I couldn't tell anything about the Bestop.

Mine works great, comes down easy enough goes back up using just the tip of my shoe. Doesn't rattle or come down in bumpy situations. I weigh about 230 and it supports me just fine.

One of the first things I did with my truck was get an Amp Bedstep and couldn't be happier. Install was easy and it does the job.

Thanks! Would you show a pic of it in the closed position? The YouTube video I saw on a Ford, it didn’t close flush with the bumper... thanks in advance!

There needs to be enough room to get a foot-hold on it to lower it. I have mine mounted off to the side enough to get my foot on it. Fitting flush would require using your hand every time and that's not what I was after.

So it’s not a fixed position that it has to be placed in? It’s adjustable? Any drilling required?

Guys, the 14-18 has two different types of AMP Research steps, 75309-01A and 75316-01A, depending if you have resin or steel inner structure. I had the 75316-01A, and it suuuucked. Sorry AMP Research, but I hated it. The step comes out the side of the bumper, not the back of the bumper. I bought one and installed it then immediately uninstalled it. The step installs relatively easily, kind of clunky until you tighten everything up and torque it down, but the thing coming out the side was bogus. And the retract bangs into the bumper hard, no way to adjust that.

When I got that one, I didn't see the other version available. So be warned!

Crap... I ordered the bedstep 75316 from Amazon thinking it was the right part number... now I’m not sure... I looked under my truck and all I saw was steel... not sure how to tell about this resin / steel thing... but I just tried to cancel my order at Amazon... we’ll see if it worked... want to talk to someone at Amp Research on Monday and see if I can figure this out.

If you get on Bestop's website, they show a model # of 7530515 but they're saying it's Backordered.

Ok... update on the Amp bedstep... just like @Tundradrenalin said, there are two parts numbers that fit 3rd gen Tundras. When I ordered from Amazon, I tried to order the 75309-01A and it said “Warning: this will not fit your Tundra”. And it suggested the 75316-01A... got that one in the mail... I installed it... and every time I folded the step up it slapped the bumper. I called Amp Research, and once he had my year, make and model, asked me if there was only metal under my truck or resin / plastic looking stuff? Mine was metal... he said “Send it back and get the 75309-01A” .... the one Amazon said wouldn’t fit. So I un-installed the wrong one, sent it back to Amazon. Ordered the 09-01A and just finished installing it. It fits and works perfectly. Nice fit and finish on the parts. There was no “forcing “ anything together. It retracts easily without slapping the bumper. I’ll post some pics of the process. Oh, and BTW, the 16-01A comes off the SIDE of the rear bumper, whereas the 09-01A comes off the rear of the bumper.

The directions that came with the step are pretty good, but here is the process anyway... 300A2090-D007-4EDE-89A4-E9FE9F4D650B.jpg
If you look under your truck where the step will mount and you see this... all metal, no resin / plastic you will need the 75309-01A.

The directions don’t tell you to remove that, but I did (only two bolts) and it made torquing the frame bolts that hold the step on A LOT easier to tighten. Then just re-install.

@Tundradrenalin - Did you end up switching from the AMP Bed Step 75316-01A to the 75309-01A? I have a 2017 Crew Max and just installed the 75316-01A and just like you said it sucks. It seems to hit the side of the truck when tucked in and no room for adjustment. I'm wanting to take it off and get the other one if that worked for you. Will the other model fit the 2017? Thanks!

Well, I can confirm through experience that the AMP bedstep model 75309-01A works fine on the 2019 TRD Pro! The instructions and pictures from MatthewPTGuy are spot on, especially this comment from him:

    > The above pic is with the step in place just before I torqued everything up. See the long, thin bracket top right of the pic?
    > The directions don’t tell you to remove that, but I did (only two bolts) and it made torquing the frame bolts that hold the step
    > on A LOT easier to tighten. Then just re-install.

    Definitely do that.

Three more tips to make the install a bit easier.

    1) The instructions say to remove the corner bumper cap. Yes, you need to do that. What it doesn't say is that there are two fasteners you need to squeeze the tabs inwards from the underside. Don't just pry the cap up with a screwdriver.

    2) The instructions also say to remove the whole rear bumper cap. That is a royal pain. Lots more of those pesky fasteners to squeeze from under the car. I took a short cut, and did just enough of them so I could lift up the bumper cap and stick a 12mm ratchet wrench under it. See below picture.

    upload_2019-1-9_22-25-45.jpg

    3) Getting the stock bumper bracket actually out, after you have removed the three bolts, isn't easy. It is a really tight fit. I only managed by removing a fourth bolt, so that I could move the metal bumper frame just enough to get the bracket out. The extra bolt I removed is the one circled in red. This picture was taken after I put the replacement bracket in, show with the red arrow.

    upload_2019-1-9_22-29-20.jpg

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for the great pics guys! Can the step be adjusted so it aligns better with the bumper?

    Not nearly enough room here!

I've adjusted mine several times due to my Chronic OCD:D I wanted it to be far enough 'off-side', to be easily reached with my foot, instead of having to use a hand to bring it down. Where it is now, is just about the sweet-spot for accessibility, function and appearance.

Does anyone have experience mounting the Bestop Trekstep with an aftermarket rear bumper?

I looked at the instructions and it seems like the mounts are to the tow hitch and all of the other stuff done to the stock bumper is making room for the step unit.

    Can anyone confirm?

You are correct. I just installed the Rough County rear bumper and the amp step fits perfect underneath. If you were to install the Rough County bumper first then the install of the step is trivial. Just use two existing bolts into the frame. Way easier than dealing with the stock bumper.
