I mentioned in the "What have you done to your 3rd Gen Today" thread that I'd tell my flat tire story, here it goes so bare with me. Saturday the wife and I wanted to hit a new gravel road that goes to a nice Ozark Mountain creek. Get to the creek and its crowded so we decided to just turn around and ride some backroads with no destination in mind. On our way out my TPMS light comes on so I stop and check, passenger rear is hissing like a possum (opossum but I'm from the South). I figured we could make it to the end of the gravel road where it meets the pavement and there's a rural volunteer fire dept that I can put my spare on in their parking lot. Made it there barely. Now I'm in shorts and flip flops and the parking lot is new asphalt and its 92 degrees outside. Of course I have to get the damn owners manual out to figure out how to lower the spare. The manual shows the proper jack points per corner and that's where I placed that POS bottle jack. I've already got the spare down and out before I jack her up, I begin to raise the truck and remove the flat all is good. I go to mount the spare and I need about one turn of the jack to get it on the lugs. The spare is resting against the hub and I give her about three turns instead of one, BAM the jack comes out from under the axle and the rotar is resting on the inside rim of the unmounted spare. Oh shit!! I scramble to carefully get the jack from under the truck (had to stick half my body under there which was very wise). The truck is still resting on the inside rim of the spare but I get the jack out and lowered and again crawl under the truck to reposition it. Got that done without being crushed and begin to jack her back up so I can get the spare on the lugs. Make some turns and again realize I just need about one turn but I did about three anyway. The spare is now on the lugs and I get one on but then the truck makes a little forward movement and BOOM. The asphalt was so hot and sticky that the foot of the bottle jack actually sunk into it on one corner with the weight of the truck. At this point I had at least one maybe more, I cant remember, lug nuts on so I jacked it up AGAIN just enough for the lug nuts to seat, snugged them up real good, then dropped the jack and tightened them the rest of the way. What a disaster and what a piece of shit jack. My old Tahoe at least has a scissor jack that's better footed. My last vehicle was a SUV that I kept a little Craftsman floor jack that came in a case in the back, with the Tundra there's no where to put one. Damn what a debacle I went through.

Shity deal! Ya a lot of people under estimate a good jack. A guy can always use a couple big hose clamps and clamp a good bottle jack somewhere on the frame. Maybe by the spare tire drivers side? I did this on an old truck I used to run. Worked well. If you don’t want to mount one up top that is.

Yeah, the bottle jacks are complete crap, that’s why I always carry a block of wood (3/1 lift here) and a couple of jack stands. Need to get on buying a solid jack for emergencies.

Did you loosen the lugs before jacking it up though? That always helps prevent unnecessary truck movement while on a jack.....and could save a limb or two not to mention I would’ve tried to find some makeshift chocks like a couple of logs or something.

Glad you got out unscathed though!!

Was just up in the Ozarks a couple of weeks ago! GREAT place!

Yea I loosed the lugs before jacking it up. I kept a floor jack in my previous SUV, Craftsman in a case, but with the Tundra there's no storage at all. Crazy how the jack edge cut into the asphalt but again it was fresh and about 92 degrees outside. What area where you in over here? I grew up in the flat lands of South AR, been here for 6 years and really like it.

I have a DC and it came with an under seat storage bin. I definitely utilize it as much as I can!

Dang, that’s crazy cutting into the asphalt!

We were in Chester, AR. About 20 mins north(ish) of Ft Smith.

Man, my wife and I were talking about just buying some land up there and building a nice getaway cabin!

If you're wanting to build a getaway cabin in this area you've got to check out the areas around Jasper, Ponca, Marshall, basically North Central AR. it's the true Ozarks with the National Buffalo River. I'm roughly an hour from any place on the Buffalo and 30 minutes from Branson MO, 2 hours from North West AR (Bentonville, Fayetteville, etc.), hour to Eureka Springs, and 2 hours from Springfield MO.

Factory jack went on a shelf the second day after I got the truck home. 5t hydrolic jack in the toolbox and the high lift in the shell. Always have several 3/4” x 12” x 12” squares of plywood.
Sorry to hear about your flat. Glad your story had a good ending. It could have been a bit worse.

This thread made me look at what I would do. Started looking for solutions and found another guy uses a hi lift base for factory jack so I got one and drilled two holes for bolts to secure the jack even better.

No pic with jack as it's already back in the truck
