Ok, not a Tundra, but the wife has been getting on me for spending so much time and funds on the truck, so I decided to surprise her with a full step detail on her Highlander.

Used Chemical Guys products and here are my comments on the process.

Step 1: Washed with Mr. Pink soap using 2 bucket method. I really like this soap for it foams up nicely.

Step 2: Clay bared. Actually did most with a Torq 10-FX orbital and a clay pad and the Chemical Guys clay lubber. This seriously sped up the process and only used an actual clay bar on the hard to get areas.

Step 3: Washed with Mr. Pink again to clean any clay bar and clay lubber residue.

Step 4: The Highlander is a couple of years old and had some minor scratches and swirls, so I polished with the Chemical Guys PD40 finishing polish. Used the Torq orbital with "white" hex-logic pad. This was perfect to removing the minor imperfections and resulted in a mirror finish.

Step 5: Sealed the car using the Chemical Guys Jet Seal. I have mixed feelings on this. I followed their video instructions by applying to the entire car and then buff off with a micro towel. However, after buffing off, there were streaks and blotches all over the place. Spent a considerable amount of time with the orbital buffing these out but the result was still nowhere near the mirror finish after the polishing. Next time I will do this in sections instead of applying to the entire vehicle at once.

Step 6: Applied Chemical Guys Extreme depth with x-seal wax. This is good wax and goes on and off quite nicely. Note; The wax seemed to take care of any blotches left over from the jet seal above.

Step 7: Applied Wax addict on all exterior rubber (tires) and trim.

Over all, it was a 10 hour day, but the wife was very happy. Now back to the truck.

Very nice work! I’m actually more impressed with how clean your garage is.

Thanks for the compliment. In reference to the garage, I grew up in a house with a 2 car garage that was beyond a disaster. As strange as it may sound, it scared me for life and I swore never to do that to my family.

Mine isn't horrible.... it's just in the process of things being gone through and thrown out and organized. I hate a messy garage too!

Thanks Sis! Maybe a quick wash before your trip, but wait until after for a full detail. This detail made me quite sore and I'm thinking you may want to enjoy your trip and not stay seated complaining as to how sore you are :)

Wow. I start getting “are you done yet?” looks from my wife after an hour...

Nice write up: short but feels complete.

In my case, it’s my family that does it to me. My wife keeps EVERYTHING. You know anyone who needs some silverware her uncle gave her twenty years ago, that she hasn’t even looked at since? How about some 35 year old softball trophies? Some old clothes that she needs to sort, since the 90’s? I’ll cut you a hell of a deal on her 8th grade perfect attendance award.

Can I just take a moment to beg you guys to get the bugs off your trucks immediately? They’re gonna etch into your paint. Please. I’m sitting here thinking about the bugs on your paint. It’s important.

True dat! My wife's not too bad in that area and I generally live by the rule; "If I have not used it in the last year or 2, than odds are I don't need it and out it goes.".

Car looks good...would love to see some sunlight shots with that black paint. I've experienced a little 'finicky' behavior with JetSeal, especially after a polish. I like, it's one of the remaining chemical guys products left on my shelf. I now do an IPA wipedown after polishing prior to it's application. Topped with Petes 53 to finish off a killer combo.

    :)
I've got 3 little kids (5mo, 2.5yrs, 5yrs) - so if I cant knock it out at nap time on Saturday or Sunday it doesnt get done... and I've only got that hour and a half to do it (takes about an hour and a half to pull out the stuff, set up the bucket, rinse off the truck, wash the truck by section, hand dry the whole thing, clean up) - usually I dont even make it to rims and tires: just pressure wash them off and that's as far as I get. I've got a bottle of Chemical Guys butter wet wax... but it's still sealed in the bottle because I haven't had a chance to apply it lol

I've used their green bottle of window cleaner and I think I like the foaming can of invisible glass better. Invisible Glass seems to be less finicky about when you apply it (temperature of the glass, direct sunlight, etc). I dont have a nice big enclosed shop/garage to detail. I'm probably going to have to take it somewhere to get it done though... it needs a good buff & wax...

Good suggestion on doing an IPA wipe down prior to applying the JetSeal. Does this help alleviate some of the "blotching" that I experienced with the JetSeal? Also, do you mix your own solution or get it pre mixed?

I'm not a big fan of paste waxes primarily due to my personal preference of not liking "can" waxes and the application process. Curous as to how long one of those cans last.

    That’s my philosophy also.

June 2017: We emptied the last of our junk out of our old house before we finally sold it. I’m throwing stuff away, my wife and daughters were separating crap they wanted to keep.
My exact words were “I don’t care if you keep stuff, just please don’t let those bags be sitting in my garage untouched a year from now.”

June 2018: Turns out my proposal was unanimously rejected by the committee.

I mix my own IPA solution. I started doing the IPA wipedown while using Meguiars Ultimate Wax after polishing, and and I've not had any issues with it bonding to the paint. While I still use JetSeal, my go-to is now McKees HiDef. I've yet to use a sealant that goes on and comes off as easy as this stuff. I've left it on overnight (on purpose), and it came off with ease. Paint is left super slick, glossy, and so far has given me 4-6 months of protection. It also gives me a better depth of color than any sealant I've used.

Thanks for the tip on McKees HiDef sealant. I may try this when I do my truck in the next couple of weeks.

Ah. I’ve used both but more Adams than CG. Adams is local to me so I support them and haven’t had any issues.

I've been at this for several years, and I started with Chemical Guys stuff, because their videos were everywhere, and a family member is a major fanboy. CG takes a bad rap, because they hype their stuff so much, and some of it is cheesy, and there are lots of haters out there. I bought in, and have some stuff left that only gets limited use now, mainly because I found something I like better. I also have some of their stuff that I started with, and continue to use because I've had good results.

I've tried products from CG, Stoners, Griots Garage, McKees, Zymol, PoorBoys World, Meguiars, Blackfire, Pinnacle, CarPro, BriteMax, and probably some others that I can not think of right now. i'm a big fan of value over pretense, and function over fashion. I settled on products that I get good results from, and give me good bang for the buck. The point I'm trying to make is not to get stuck on any one brand....there are way too many good choices out there.
