I always fill up my tank when it's half empty. Anyone else? Is this safe?

I like to have a full tank of gas, and whenever it reaches half empty I always fill it up. I never let it go below half full. Even more so because I have the small gas tank (26 gallons).

Anyone else do this? Is there a concern that the "old" gas isn't getting cycled out, and eventually will go bad?

You are fine. I hope you don't take many long trips, though. Stopping every 2.5 hours will get old.

With that said, 1/2 on the gauge is not really half in the tank.

I had a Tacoma up until a few months ago and a tank of gas would last me a week....and to fill it up was 15 gallons. I traded that truck in and got a 18 Tundra and a half a tank last a week ....and I put the same amount of gas in it to fill it.

LOL. ^. I have both and have found the same. They don't use that much more fuel than a Tacoma.

It depends on a whole lot of variables. I have never ran out of gas in any vehicle, much less, my Tundra. The fuel indicator is very reliable. You should have a few gallons of reserve in the tank once the indicator comes on. In fact, I have literally driven 10+ miles on “E” long after the indicator light comes on:infantry::mudding:

I fill up when it gets to a little under 3/4 of a tank. I don't want to feel the pain of filling up a 38 gallon tank from empty. I have just driven local so far. I've only had two weeks.

    exactly.

I could never get used to driving the Tacoma, I missed the extra power and height, so I had the chance to move up and momma ( the mrs ) said it was ok. having the extra power is REALLY nice......

Agreed, my taco burns as much fuel as my tundra but is much smaller and less power. Go figure.

I usually fill my tundra up just before empty, if you guys are only using half a tank and then filling up are you ever cycling the older fuel out? I guess it dilutes over fill ups but I would think running it lower and adding more fresh fuel the truck will run better, especially with today's ethonal crap.

just a fyi.....at half a tank its 15 gallons , so that will give you an idea if you want to let it get to that point before filling up. if I did 3/4 I would be filling up every couple of days.

I typically fill up with just over 1/4 tank remaining because the Safeway gas points max out at 25 gal. (This and my wife does not like seeing the $100+ fill-ups of the cc.:D)

I fit at least 20 gal when mine's at half, usually closer to 25.

I use my Safeway points and test myself to see if I can hit exactly 25 gallons to make sure I don’t waste a cent of the discount.

I have a 38 gal tank and fill up half way. I don't want a $100 gas bill. But half isn't really half. When I fill at half, it only takes 14 gallons. At least it doesn't take premium.

I try to fill up when the gauge goes below half a tank. That way I don't have to make an emergency fill up if there's a crisis of some kind. As for old vs new gas, the gas is thoroughly mixed when you fill the tank.

I know and yes, its getting old filling up every three days. I did let it go to just under half once and it was almost 50.00 to fill up. It's a silly mind game. I'll get used to this shitty gas mileage. I love this truck too much not to.

Yep-between a half- and a quarter-tank, I am filling up. For all the same reasons people are listing.

The lowest I can stand is between 1/4 and 1/2. Half is when I strive to fill up.

I try to fill up at half or above. Having the pump shut off because the price is too high is annoying. A 38 gallon tanks does that in California. :(

I love how this is a thread.

There are more of these types of threads on this site than there are with issues or real problems with the trucks.

On that note, I fill up whenever I go to Costco. If I’m near a half tank when I’m there it’s getting filled up. Otherwise as soon as it starts getting near a quarter tank I try to get gas. 26 gallon tank. Every so often I screw up in the light comes on and that makes me anxious. I don’t think I’ve ever put more than 22 gallons in though. And that was maybe once or twice. Usually it’s anywhere between 15 gallons and 20.

I always fill up when it’s a quarter full.

I remember being younger and an engineer buddy of mine told me it was bad to let it get near empty because of the residue or whatever.

Don’t know if I believe that now that I’m older and less gullible....or is it more cynical??? Eh semantics.

But that reason started my quarter full habit and I haven’t stopped since LOL
