I have new Ray10’s coming Wednesday and have new Ridgegrapplers waiting at Discount Tires. Do I have to get new TPMS installed? Can I go without them? My light has been on for the eight months I have owned truck. So if I need them. Do I need to get the oem ones for $56.00 each. Or is there a generic replacement? Thanks. D

Do you need them, no. Will it be annoying having the light on all the time, yes. If light is already on and all the tires are fine, you either have a bad one that needs replaced or even the spare lost some air. So fill all tires including the spare and if still on you have a bad one. Edit: or since you bought used they never had any to begin with.

The ones that are still good can be switched over. Just depends if you want that light on all the time or not saying low/flat tire.

I would want them. Discount tire broke one of my OEM and replaced with their generic version and it has lost communication twice.

This is exactly what happened to mine after one of the sensors was replaced. The shop would program only the one that was repaired and sure enough the light came back on twice. On the third return trip for the light, another worker comes out and tells his coworker to reprogram all 4 from a fresh start and that did the trick, no more light..

Keep in mind many tire shops won’t install wheels/tires on your vehicle without sensors if originally equipped. This is for liability reasons, since TPMS is considered a safety system.

My OCD won’t allow a TPMS light to stay on.

New Tundra owner here. My SR5 has the ugly steel wheels right now. So you are saying that I can buy a set of wheels from someone on here when they say in their post "NO TPMS" that just means that I will have the existing TPMS sensor or system (whichever it is) transferred from my current wheels to the new ones? Sorry if this is stupid. I have never had to deal with this issue before. Thanks

Yes. Basically just have wheels and tires taken off and put on the new ones with the previous sensors. I am anal and would want them rebalanced anyways cause no telling how previous owner had them.

The steel wheels have 40 degree sensors, alloy wheels require 20 degree senors. Some tire shops are willing to "flip" the 40 degree sensors so they'll still work, but you'll have to warn anyone that removes a tire or they're likely to break the sensor. I picked up four 20 degree sensors on ebay for cheap, just waiting for my new wheels to arrive.

put a sticker over the dash light and drive on...

Thankfully Toyota fixed my pesky TPMS system about a year ago and have had 0 issues since. So I did not have to resort to the ‘sticker fix’.
