Rodents chewed through....

my e vap line from gas tank to charcoal canister. Dealer states i need to replace whole tank since the line is connected to a piece of grommet that is pressed in the tank. I saw the line and where the little bass turds chewed through.
My question, can I splice a piece of tubing where the rodents chewed and seal it up pretty good ?
Has anyone experienced this ?
I really do not want to drive around with my CEL on all the time.
Help please as they want $1600.00 to fix.

If it isn't TOO bad, you may be able to slide some heat shrink tubing over it and melt it on to the original piece. Would have to be careful not to shrink it too small to where the line gets stopped up. If you can't find any other options it would be worth a try before you spent $1600.

 

You can not see them in the pic. When you bend the hose there are gnaw holes and that is throwing the code.
This tube leads to the charcoal canister and where smoke was coming from on the test.

 

What are your thoughts on flex seal?

 

what about black electrical tape or the liquid electrical stuff?

 

Nothing underneath. When I bend the tube I can see the small holes. Mechanic told me only vapors go through so no pressure on the line. I thought about splicing a small part where the holes are.

What type of epoxy? I have not had a lot of need for it until now.

Use epoxy it resist fuel and fuel vapors.

While the tank is down goto a home depot and get a thin sheet on metal bend and secure it.. Problem solved.

That I bet you will have to order that unless you have a aircraft repair shop local to you that will sell it.

 

Why not splice in a new piece of hose with some inline connectors and hose clamps?

 

I would just wrap it with a premium brand of electrical tape from a home depot.
You can even get it in your choice of color. If the CEL stays clear problem solved. I had a packrat chew an antilock brake wire and it affected my 4WD System. $300 repair.

 

I wouldn't go with electrical tape John. It gets too brittle when cold, and breaks down pretty fast over time. You would need something a little better like permatex. It is ment for a oh shit repair like this.

Personally, I would use this as an excuse to get a bigger fuel tank like the others above. I would just tell my wife, "the mechanic said I had to buy a new one. WTF was I supposed to do?"

 

Insurance claim. It would fall under comprehensive. Act of nature or act of rat.

Use the sealant in post 11. I have a lot of experience using it. It should seal it right up and will withstand the environment its in. You need to follow the mixing instructions to the T or it wont set up right. The A2 version will give you a longer work time vs the A1/2. Follow the cure time and it should last a life time.

If you go this route shoot me a message and i will explain how to properly mix it. You will need a tongue depressor and or an acid brush to apply it evenly.

that tape will dry rot within a yr and need replacing... its great tape for protecting not so much for sealing and fighting gas vapors and the abuse of the environment. great for a quick fix get me home type repair, but not long term. we use a similar tape on aircraft and we are always replacing it in areas like the landing gear wheel wells where it dry rots.

 

I would be real careful about melting anything with fuel vapors in them.

 

I did the same thing several years ago using a bit of fuel line and a couple small hose clamps to seal up a busted plastic vacuum line under the hood of my old chevy pickup. That repair is still in place.
