Buying a new truck. Talk me out of buying a F150

Hi all,

Really liking the reputation of Tundras, but also still considering a Ford F150 XLT. Kind of on the fence at this point.

My #1 most important consideration is reliability. That said, Ford sales guy was trying to convince me that F150s are super reliable, he's had them for decades, etc, etc and Tundras are just outdated, old technology, behind the times, etc.

What would you say to convince me to go with a Tundra rather than an F150?

Co-worker bought a white platinum eco boost in 2015. Went into limp mode on him last week. Out of warranty and it's going to cost to fix it. I have a 2014 Tundra with 91k on it. I've just done regular maintenance on the truck. He wants a Tundra now

The one above is for 2018 models. This one is for 2015-2017 models. So, they didn't even fix it...

My 07 is just shy of 90K now. 11 years old. Zero issues let alone major ones..........Clearly has a lot to do with being Slate Metallic..........

Google ecoboost limp mode f150....besides, who in the hell wants to drive in an aluminum can? Tundra all day, every day. I will take outdated and reliable Toyota any day over anything on the market. Good luck with your purchase.

There is no better feeling than starting your truck every day (even with a key) knowing you can drive from CA to NY and back with zero issues. I wouldn’t hesitate for one second.
That’s worth everything to me.

I went from Toyota 20 years ago, to GM, to Nissan, to Infiniti, and learned my lesson. The last Nissan will be sold soon and 3 Toyota’s will be sitting in the drive.
Every platform has its downfalls. The Tundra just doesn’t have many LOL.

 

I'll be honest with you, I got to drive a new ('18) Ford Raptor last week and put about 200 miles on it. It had the twin turbo V6. I was impressed with the power. It gets up and goes. My buddy drove the very same truck a few months ago and last Monday he flew out to Vegas to go buy an F-150. It is technologically superior to the Tundra, at least my SR5 package.

Will the Ford twin turbo v6 last that long? Who knows, it's still very new.

The Ford has an aluminum body and bed. Yeah that's nice for mileage and beer cans, but I wouldn't trust it in a severe crash. Also, nothing magnetic will stick to the body. C/B antenna? Good luck. One of those magnetic business signs you can put on if you wanted? Not happening.

Ford also laid off 7000 employees and slowed production on building it's trucks because the plant that builds the dashboards burned down. They are now scrambling to find a supplier that can build them and is investing billions to do so. That might affect the F150s pricing. I don't know.


Bottom line, if you want something reliable that will last you a long time with a high resale value and very little issues, get the Tundra.

If you want an unproven power plant from a company that might not be able to supply replacements parts if you need them and a lot of creature comforts and bells and whistles, get the Ford.

I've been driving for 23 years. My current Tundra is my third ever vehicle and third Toyota. My friend with the new F150 also has an '08 f250 superduty. He's had it a year and I've never ridden in it as it's always in the shop being fixed.

The only reasons Fords are the "#1 selling truck" is because you have to buy a new one every few years.
If you like turbo charged V6 and high tech, get the Ford
If you like a traditional V8 and reliability, get the Tundra

Prior to buying my Tundra I was briefly on the fence as well. I'll admit Ford makes a nice looking truck. So does Chevy/GMC for that matter. The tech and gas mileage are tempting but I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on one. I've driven Toyota trucks for the last 15 years and they've never let me down, can't put a price on that kind of reliability. Ford and Chevy guys give the Tundra a hard time for having an "old" motor. I don't view it as old. I view it as perfected. Spend $50k on unproven technology or $50K on something you can keep as long as you want. Just my 2 cents... Ended up getting the Tundra and have zero regrets. Besides, who buys a truck for good gas mileage...

With that statement right there I think it'd be an easy decision to go with the Tundra, especially if you're considering an Ecoboost. I was in your shoes about a year ago and almost bought an XLT with the 5.0L Coyote, but after spending some time on the Ford forums I just couldn't go for it. Also, every salesman I've ever talked to of course told me their brand was the best, so I wouldn't believe a word out of their mouths. Yes, the Fords have some more features, but most lose their novelty fairly quickly and then you'll wish you had something reliable.

 

Get the Raptor or get a Tundra and supercharge it.

If you are serious with your question, you really should buy the Ford.

 

No resale value in a Ford. Strong resale value in a Tundra.

 

The raptor is still a piece of shit Ford, same reliability as the rest of their junk. Not to mention, quite fucking ugly.

 

I was in the same boat two months ago. I wanted reliable, tech, etc. I ended up with Toyota for 2 reasons: reliable and resale value. Plus low financing rates and low cost of extended warranties sealed the deal. The Tundra is dated on tech in comparison, but I have no complaints with the tech I have and haven't found myself missing features. If I had it to do over, I'd still get the Tundra. Good luck!
