Do I really need a $450 100% transmission flush?

Hi all

I have a 2010 Tundra "work truck" - have used heavily for plowing (30+ driveways 2-3 times per storm) the first few years, tapering off over the years to only my own today. I also have done some 33' camper towing, utility trailer, etc. Always had "clean bill of health" at oil change services and it's only got 60k miles on it but it's time. The dealership says it's about 4 hours and $450. I've had dozens of flushes before when I had 4-5 trucks going (all american makes) and it usually ran $100-$125.

I know my Tundra's tranny is "sealed" hence I'm guessing I have to be more careful than with a model with a dipstick. But do I really need a $450 tranny flush? I'm giving the truck to my daughter this year or next year after having purchased a Toyota additional 5yr/60K bumper to bumper warranty (unbelievable that they even have such a thing) so I don't expect to abuse the tranny any further. Perfectly willing to do it, but just don't want to throw money away if I don't really need to.

I believe the recommended 60k Trans. is a "drain and fill" of the pan, usually 4-5 quarts getting replaced. Not the Flush. Should only be $100-150ish.

They would probably do the drain and fill if I asked them. They were just thinking where it's 8 years old, used heavily for plowing, doing the 100% flush a little early wouldn't be the worst idea. But I think I like the drain and fill idea better!

 

Depending on what the fluid looks like, say it looks really bad ,you could get it done again soon to replace more of the fluid. There are some on here that do this themselves and more frequently. The trick is to replace the same amount of fluid taken out or possibly create problems. There are Youtube videos that make it look doable for the DIY guy.

That seems very low, extremely good deal. That may not cover the cost of the new fluid.

 

Fluid is 90 bucks. I called every dealer in the area. Some did the flush some didn’t. Lowest price was 200. Highest was 400. I confirmed they did the full flush with I believe it was 12 quarts of world standard.

Lol. I usually do all my own maintenance and got pretty pissed when I saw how big of a pain in the ass it was to deal with this trans so yes I power shopped. Lol.

 

The dealer will sell you anything you are willing to pay for. Although I don't recommend it, I have taken several vehicles to over 200,000 miles without a transmission flush. My dealer has coupons on their web site. I would recommend waiting until they have a 25% or so coupon, and do it then. No need to rush just because the schedule says it has to be done now.

 

My dealer recently quoted me $149 for a drain and fill. My service advisor said that they recommend against a flush as it opens the door to potential problems. I'm at 63,000 and he said that they would be happy to do it but that it wasn't necessary until 100k since I'm not towing and he knows my truck gets babied.
