A younger friend of mine went out and got his dream truck, a Raptor.

I have to admit, I have been in a few before but never "wanna drive?"

The answer was "hell yes!!!" before he could finish getting the word "drive" out. Lol.

I may need to go test drive a TRD Pro to get my man card back.

On another note, I can tell some simple suspension work could make this truck ride/handle better than ever. Not sure how far down the rabbit hole I wanna go though....

Think the ford raptor is the ONLY ford product I'd consider purchasing. They are pretty cool!

He didn't get the EB Raptor. Are they even out yet? He already is "feeling the bern" from 11 mpg. Of course any of our trucks lifted with 35's would probably not do any better.

I'll get some pics the next time we go out shooting. He has a pistol I want to try out.

Really weird. Saturday I got to test drive a black 2010 Raptor with the 6.2L, 411hp, 32K miles at Davidsons Motors just down the street. I have to admit I was somewhat impressed. Really impressed, but not sure about the $38K price. I've seen Raptors with more mileage go for over $40K. For a lot less money you can have a beefier suspension setup on your Tundra than the Raptor. That being said, Ford did pretty well for a true turn key off road road truck.

The 6.2 pulls like a diesel honestly. It's smooth and it feels like a freight train pulling. I really liked driving it.

Ford is doing some good things lately. Frankly no truck is going to do good on a rear impact at speed. For the displacement the 3.5L is a tank. Just shy of 400 HP and 420Ft/lbs? And with a simple $600 tune you can get another 60 RWHP?

I heard from a Ford mechanic and self proclaimed ford man that the new ecoboost engine is burning up cylinders rather badly, so what did they do to remedy the situation? Fix it? No, they shortened the warranty. I haven't researched this yet to confirm but I will always prefer a V8 in my trucks... Turbocharged engines produce a lot of heat.

The raptor would be awesome to lease for a couple of years but I wouldn't want to own one long term. It's still a Ford. Here's some of the problems many '15-'16 F150's are having.

    Cargo light melting
    door locks freezing
    Hard downshifts
    Seat coolers not working
    Leaking moonroofs
    Misaligned doors
    Pedal vibration
Parking nose down with low fuel
    Driveline vibration
    Loose leather seats
    Bad door latches
    Rattles in interior

Too many to list. And I think they already have a couple of recalls and dozens of TSB's.
That was my biggest problem with Ford. They won't acknowledge problems. Any problem you have, they call it a "characteristic". And as soon as the warranty ends, that's when it's a problem that needs to be fixed. And then 10 years down the line, they'll lose a class action suit for it, but only the original owners can collect. By then everyone's sold their trucks and Ford pays out very little. I'd rather have a TRD Pro.

Yeah, they're nice looking but you can't put 200k miles on them. I had a 5.0 F150 and at 95k miles it didn't drive nearly as good as my Tundra which now has over 103k miles.

My 16 year old tundra with 177k miles on her still runs like the day I bought her. I sold her to my dad cause he needed one and I like the 2014+ model.

Until I hear documented proof is just hearsay to me.

Keeping in mind I own a 2007 tacoma, 2002 sequoia and the wife has a 2004 tundra.

I agree with you 100%. I would want this confirmed but I stick to my statement about wanting a V8 over a 6. The Tacoma would be an awesome truck if the stuck the 4.6L engine in it. Would probably buy that over a tundra if they did. Both trucks have their strong points.

I noticed right away the suspension/ride was kick ass. Engine torque was obvious from the git go. The interior was well set up. 4X4 shifting layout was well thought out. SVT folks. The Raptor wasn't made for daily drivers and weekend warriors. My new issue of Four Wheeler mag has the 2016 Taco 2nd,Titan XD was 3rd. The Dodge Ram Rebel at #1. Toyota needs to wake up. The Tundra Pro's are nice , but can't compete. Facts trump truth. Just stating the obvious.

Toyota has always been conservative with their vehicles. That's why they're so bullet proof.

Mat, what do you mean can't compete, off-road or over all. Tundra Pro won the 4x4 challenge against the ram rebel, which to me is ugly as can be imop of course. I remember when the raptor first came out. Was headed home and rolled up beside this beast of a truck thinking that is badass. If Toyota didn't produce trucks that would be my pick

Conservative doesn't go too far nowadays. The competitors are finally making near bullet proof trucks too. Toyota can maintain the bullet proof tranny's , quality, and reliability easily , but the 5.7L needs to be updated. Our competitors are producing smaller engines with decent hp, high torque along with decent mpg's and LSD/locker options. Gas will hit $4 again. Sooner or later shit hits the fan. Toyota did very well with the new Taco. Tundra's turn for a new "true" 4th gen to be able to compete.

The Rebel is ugly as hell. You have to keep in mind that for a truck (or any 4X4 for that matter) to be considered for any 4X4 mag test, the vehicles involved have to have some major changes or they won't be considered. You have to take the 4X4 mag tests with a grain of salt. The new Taco had "major" changes. New engine for example. I think a locker is available again for the Taco.

There are so many scenarios for a 4X4 to compete. A truck with zip, zero, nil, lockers/LSD will not compete with a similarly configured truck when the going gets tough. There are a lot of "challenges" out there. Depends where these challenges take place. I love my Tundra, but hate the lack of not having a true non computer controlled locker/LSD, which quite frankly should not be an option, but standard. I'm coming from a 4 wheeling perspective, not flat land off road racing.

Ditto on that. Other than some decent interior upgrades and sheet metal/bumpers, the "3rd gen" Tundra is mechanically the same truck as the 2nd gens. That's why the 2016 Tundra isn't being tested with the new 4X4's. They could make a new Samurai, and it would be tested because it's new and may take 1st place in some stupid magazine or challenge. Like I said, most of these test/challenges are relative to "new" vehicles. What tics me off is Toyota's "gentlemans truck" Tundra commercials. Doesn't bode well for us who expect Toyota to at least offer a Raptor type option. The Pro is decent but doesn't have a foot or more of travel suspension off the car lot. They would sell every one if they did. (Actually Toyota probably does sell every Pro they make.) The new Raptor will for sure destroy everything out there as far as turn the key and driving it off the lot. I hate to admit it but probably true. At a price for sure. You can upgrade any truck. I still believe it's cheaper to upgrade a Tundra to have a comparable suspension. Easier to do with some "skin" , but I can't see paying a lot of money on a new truck to get it up to snuff. Maybe easier to do on an older Tundra like mine. No warranty to fret over. Just throwing out my opinion, no right or wrong here I'm thinking.

I think the '17 Raptor will have electronic power assist steering (EPAS). That EPAS rack is pure Chinese junk! The EPAS rack on my '12 F150 Supercrew failed at 3K miles and required a full rack replacement, and there's no fixing these racks!
Any F150 with a 6.2 will have hydraulic steering, but if it's got an Ecoboost it will have EPAS, and that in and of itself, is a deal breaker for me. Love my PRO!

Love the Pro too. Not a fan of the ECO Boost. I think the new Raptor comes with 3.5L V-6 twin turbo DFI boost and supposedly 450 HP+ with 434 ft lbs of torque and true dual exhaust and even a more robust suspension. I guess my main point is suspension, not so much what Eco Boost is in the Raptor. I'd like to see a comparable suspension offered as an option at least on a new true generation Tundra/ Pro. Maybe two or three engines to choose from.

The NEW Raptor suspension will be tied to an EPAS rack - weak, and can't trust it. Too bad, as the rest of the truck is badas*!
