Trailer Safety Chain

Pulled my Jon boat to the beach for the first time in my Tundra. My safety chain won’t secure to the hitch because of the thickness around the opening. See pic. I made it but I want a better solution. Any ideas?

 

Google search "safety chain quick link" that's probably the easier cheapest option for you... here's an example of what I'm talking about .

Mine looks the exact same. Did the same thing as you.

Upgrade to these, no offense but those are junk. Better safe than sorry even on a small trailer.

 

Got it. I saw those on Amazon. I need a slightly longer chain too. Might stop in at Lowe’s and see what they have.

Yep saw those at Home Depot or Walmart. Going to stop by one of those places first so I can make sure the size will work.

 

Those look like they weigh more than my entire set up lol

 

It’s hard to judge online...any size info on the Clevis that we know will work?

 

They might lol there's different sizes obviously. Mine have a 1/4 stamped on them if that helps you guy's out. Hooked to 12x7 enclosed trailer.

 

1/4" hooks will also work.

When I clip the hook on to the hitch I do need to rotate the hook a bit so that the clasp closes. Not difficult and there is no struggle to get them on or off.

 

If you're going to pick up a longer chain - make sure you have enough room to cross the trailer chains before attaching to the hitch. Lots of people don't cross the chains, but I prefer the extra peace of mind.

I have to replace my chains with longer ones. Bought chain and same quick links as @ColoradoTJ but I wasnt real sure exactly what hooks

 

That's why I am replacing my chain, they were not long enough to cross

Crossing safety chains is by far the best way. If your trailer were ever to go off without a hitch, the crossed chains will cradle the tongue, rather then letting it drop and potentially dig in to the road surface. Crossed chains also greatly reduce the amount a trailer can move side to side if if became unhitched.

The fact remains though, their best purpose is to ensure you are fully punished for however you f#*%ed up with your hitch, and beat the heck out of the rear of your truck as a reminder.

 

I keep the same thing in my truck along with a 4 flat light wire extension. I've run into too many trailers that don't work with my truck.
