Anyone running a Softopper?

I'm considering a topper. Problem is... I currently have a hard fold tonneau cover... so...

Let’s see those softtopper and caps. Help me decide.

@COMiamiFan how do you like it? What are your thoughts? I know subtle differences for DC and CM, but that looks good. Plus, bed space is available easily.

Being in CO.. how’s it holding up against the weather? How waterproof is it? Super hot inside during the summer?

 

I love it. Put up/take down in 5 mins top. Most of the time it’s off and stored in the garage, so it’s not exposed to the elements much. It’s waterproof, no water come so in while I have driven in the rain. Being black, it will get hot in there. I’ve never slept in it, but when I’m parked and out hiking, when I get back it’s hot in there. But as you can see you can easily open all around and get some air in there. Been good in the snow too.

Only thing I don’t like is on the highway the air pressure will push the canvas inwards along the aluminum frame and cause a parachute effect. I’m sure it’s affecting Gad mileage on the highway.

But other than that, it’s awesome because I can have my truck looking like a pick up without the hassle of removing a 200# hard shell and then figuring out how to store it.

I’ve had jeeps with soft tops, so I’m familiar with the air pressure issue. Thanks for the info guys.

 

At least the soft topper is the right color.

Stays put away most of the time, but I'll yank the tonneau and put it on for a quick overnighter once in a while. Works great and highly recommended! This is a softopper brand cover.

I see 'em from time to time on CL. I picked mine up for $400 and it was like new.

I have been looking into one of these covers as well. I love the versatility of them. Has anyone on here had one on through winter months? How did it hold up?

 

That is what I was wondering. The durability of the material if you had to put it up or down in the cold.

As others posted mine is mostly stored because it is so easy on/off and takes up little space.

It can leak water in the bottom corners by the cab. Have to make sure you position it properly when you mount it.

That was the most time consuming part on the install; getting the rails just right. But once on, I left on so I don't worry about alignment when needed to put the cover back on.

 

No problem leaving mine on all winter. I love it.

 

Had one on my last truck, F250. Loved it, sold it to a buddy with same body/bed F250. He keeps it on the truck year round.

I miss it and it's versatility a lot. It did leave some serious blind spots behind me and off the sides of the bed. I had to keep the back window off most of the time because I couldn't look through the vinyl for longer trips, drove me nuts.

I would do another one if I really needed a topper again. I previously camped, slept in the truck, carried bikes in the truck...I now have a toyhauler and find that I really don't even use the bed when we take weekend trips.

 

Considering a Softopper, but I have a sprayed-in bedliner.... I DO NOT want to screw holes into the bed of my truck to secure the front part of the Softopper.

Is there another way to secure it?

 

They provide velcro if you don't want to use the supplied buttons. The velcro will not stick. Absolutely 100% will come off within the first month, if not the first week. I had my last softopper installed on my F250, it was linex'd. Didn't bother me for a second to drill the 3 small holes. Drill the holes, the supplied bottons and screws are stainless, screw them into the holes, done.

I still miss my softopper. I may get another for the Tundra. The Tundra is linex'd as well, I would use the bottons again without hesitation.

Pro tip for the back flap. They also provide velcro for this, or just let it hang. Again, the velcro will come off in short order. Get about a dozen small rare-earth magnets and a strip of wide velcro maybe 2" if I remember, put the magnets between the flap and the velcro, you just made a magnetic flap to hold the back flap against your tailgate.

 

I like the magnet idea.

I was thinking about the possibility of adding a bar/frame rail across the front of the bed....? Maybe a couple brackets and a piece of bar stock?

Then you could slip the flap under the cross-bar, and then snap it back onto that cross-bar, as an idea...
