Who owns Timbrens? Best clearance?

Clearance recommendation is 1/2” to 1-1/2” installed.

What’s your clearance? Are you hitting them much unloaded and city/highway driving?

 

Is that clearance when loaded, or unloaded? I don’t have them, I’m just wondering because I would consider them, if I ever get that travel trailer I want.

 

Unloaded, they replace the tiny stock bump stops. Loaded, there is no clearance because they prevent your truck from sagging, you ride on them.

There’s also SumoSprings and AirBags as options, with their pros/cons.

You’ll need a good WDH as well connected to a TT which will do a lot of the weight shifting and leveling.

 

Thanks I definitely would be getting a WDH well as sway control.
I just wonder what the ride is like unloaded if you always bottom out on them.

I’ve been thinking of another way to go. Either doing an add a leaf, completely new springs, or ....

Going with shackle. I’ve heard that it causes your springs to go flat eventually. But I think it does that because it has lifted your truck without extending the bump stops. Causing your spring to flex further up than it used to go when it contacts the bump stops. Intern wearing your spring out prematurely.

If you look at superbumps rear bump stops they extend further than the stock bump stop. Even the bracket that they mount to is taller than the stock pump. So if the superbump compresses the same amount as your stock bumps, but is setting on a tripod taller up, it should have the same amount of travel as it did before you add shackles.

I was thinking this would help with the problem of adding +3 shackles. I’m fine with the factory rake. I will be adding pro front and rear suspension soon and I am thinking about getting the stock rake back.

Do you have stock suspension, no rear shackles or lift? What is the exact clearance (unloaded) if you removed the bumpstop?

 

I have them.
I run them only when loaded. When I'm unloaded I replace the timbren spring with wheelers super bumps. To me it's the ideal situation.
I have a CB +2 shackle in the rear so I run a 1" spacer along with the timbren spring to bring my clearance to .75". But I don't ever run them unloaded

 

At the moment stock suspension. I just acquired the pro suspension from another member. But that’s just CO upfront and shocks in back. 2 inches in the front give or take.

Right now from frame to the top of the bump stop is 3 3/8” The bump stop itself is about
2 3/4 inch tall. So roughly 6 inches from top of the leafspring to the frame.

 

Do you take the U bolts on and off and reuse them?

Nope. Leave the timbren base in. Just unholy the timbre spring and bolt in th super bump.
Takes longer to get the jacj and raise the frame if the truck then it does to swap them out

 

Same perch for both, just swap the bumps and timbrens. Easy

Although I would like to know if you could, how much the perch relocates the bump stop mounting point. Sorry it’s hard to explain through text.


Looks to be between an 1” and 1 1/2”
Which I think would compensate for the height of a lifted shackle. Just thinking more along the lines of not wanting to Springs hyperextend. Possibly keep them from fatiguing.

 

I really like the idea of being able to swap the Timbren in just to tow, Then switching back to the Superbump. That’s a good compromise.

 

The perch height is 1 3/8". Then add on the superbump or timbren.
Is that what you are asking?

Yes sir. Thanks! That would be equal to about +3 shackle. I think this is my new plan for the rear end. I like your set up.

 

Now this isn't going to raise the rear of the truck at all. A shackle will raise the rear

 

I understand. I’m saying using them in concession with each other. So basically the super bump acts as a bump stop extension when coupled with its mount.

So 3+ shackle along with timbren base
So I can swap between the timbren and the superbump. Along with maybe a 1 inch spacer for the timbren.

 

Great pic, do you find removing the spacer with just the Timbren still too tall? Is that why you switch in the Superbump?

 

I got what you are saying now. The super bump is also taller that the factory bump but it's also much more progressive so I assume it will compress more

 

Yes, plus I want to keep the travel in the rear when offroading. Plus the timbrens aren't terribly forgiving when engaged. The superbumps were about $60 if I remember, money well spent

 

Just watched a Timbren install and he mentioned the 8 U-bolt nuts are one time use although he was working on an ‘08 Tundra, he said get new ones + washers from Toyota. I haven’t come across anyone saying that?

 

I havent either. I reused mine and torqued to spec. Seem to be holding fine

 

Yes I learned this recently, you need to replace the U bolts to be safe.

 

A lot of guys do it I’m sure you’ll be fine.

 

@94slowbra, what is your exact clearance unloaded? (assuming nothing installed, I’m just under 8”)

 

Clearance from top of bump to where it would contact frame? With what bump installed?
Keep in mind I run a +2 shackle in the rear.
I will check tomorrow and let you know but 8" between top of bump and frame seems like alot. When I was measuring before I bought all this stuff I think I was 7.5" from the top of the leaf to the frame.

 

My father I law has these on his half ton Chevy . I know it’s no Toyota but I will toss in my two cents. It bottoms out on the timbrens every bump and it’s unbearable. They seem quite stiff imo. Which makes sense since they are anti squat. Worse in the winter for sure when they freeze! Makes for a pretty annoying drive anywhere.

 

I noticed in the etrailer SumoSprings install video, they did not say anything about new nuts either but he did apply a strip of Loctite along the U-bolt thread first before putting back the old washers and nuts.

 

7.5" sounds about right, CB+2 = 1.25", I'm on Toytec 1.5" setting

Since the Timbrens including perch are exactly 5-1/8" high, I'll stack 1" + 1/2" spacer. And I'll simply remove the spacers when not towing. If I'm still bottoming out hard unloaded on my daily travels, I'll consider the shorter SuperBumps, which I assume can use the same bolt receiver in the Timbren perch?
