It turns out that he did not take the gun out. He had it in his backpack, and I guess he told another kid about it. The kid told the staff, and the police came and arrested him during lunch. The backpack was in a classroom. Apparently he told the kid that he was going to kill himself. Hopefully they can get him some good help.
It was pretty scary for a while. We didn’t have any details, only that a gun was found and that the school was on lockdown. My daughter said they were told it was a drill, but they knew it wasn’t, because the teachers were acting very apprehensive and clearly taking this very seriously.
My first instinct was to haul ass to the school, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near it. All I could do was wait and trust that law enforcement and staff were protecting the kids. They did a commendable job, and I feel they did their job very well. The quick response by all of them made me feel much better about how seriously they are taking the safety of our kids. That said, if he’d decided to attack people, there’s no way to prevent at least some casualties. They had the kid in Santa Fe locked down within four minutes, and he still managed to kill ten people.

The same week as this Texas shooting - a school shooting in Dixon Illinois was stopped by an armed resource officer, who shot the 19 year old former student. The kid opened fire at a pre graduation rehearsal. For some reason it did not get much play on the news (wonder why). An armed security stopped a shooting - IT works!!!

The media doesnt pick those stories up, due to the effectiveness of a gun. The media just wants to show how bad they are, and not how they can be effective for stopping such instances when used correctly.

This crap has to stop. As a father to two high school age kids I worry everyday when they head to school. You can add metal detectors armed police officers etc. but if won't fix the problem. IMHO 3 things can make a huge difference.

    1. Parents lock up your guns!!!! I have plenty of fire arms in the house but my kids can't get to them. That doesn't mean they can't get them somewhere else but they won't get mine.

    2. Better Parenting- I was one of 4 kids and both parents worked including a dad that travelled a lot. My parents where still very involved and knew what I was doing, who I was hanging out with and just an overall awareness of what was going on in my life. I don't "micro manage" my kids but know all their friends acquainted with their friends parents, and know what they are up to and I talk to them about "life" on a daily basis but there are a lot of parents that have zero involvement in their kids lives. Both of my kids play club soccer and there are kids on both their teams that they have played with for multiple years and I have never seen one or parents at a game or practice, I mean ever.

    3. Mental health- this is the toughest one and not sure how to tackle it but something needs to be done to try and identify the kids with mental health issues. Part of it can be solved by item number 2 but this is a huge problem.

Will fixing the above solve the issue, probably not but I am sure it can help. I just know we have a huge problem and it isn't all about gun control.

So I just gave you an actual situation, where armed security works and stopped a shooting. Yet you come back with "that wont fix the problem"...but these 3 things will - Better Parenting - well yeah - how do you make that work? How do you legislate that? YOU CANT!

Mental Health - again no problem from me but, you will just have the ADA, HIPAA, and a number of other hurdles to deal - with. Both political sides will try and use that one to their advantage, it will go no where in a hurry.

Locking up your guns - yep couldn't agree more - however that's already a law.

Actual tangible things we can do right now are armed security, and/or metal detectors. Out of the 2 of those the armed security is a priority.

Sure you gave me an example, armed security will help but there needs to be more. I promise in a 6A texas high school with 4000-5000 students something like this could still happen. with a armed resource officer. As far as my thoughts I am not saying any of this needs to be done by legislature but how about society pull its head out of its A$$ and do something about it and not wait for the government to fix everything.

And not saying my thoughts (which are just my thoughts) are the end all be all so don't get your panties in a wad.

No panty wadding here bro I'm dealing with tangibles and reality. Your making my point, you can't legislate it nor can you "wish" or "make" society be better parents, its just wishful thinking which does nothing to solve the problem. At the end of the day I think we are more in agreement than not.

Although I believe in armed security as well, Santa Fe had 2 armed police officers, and it didn't work. I'm sure it saved more innocent lives though....:(

The news say that from the first shot, to when an officer had him cornered was four minutes.

It’s not a law to lock up firearms at home in most states @Woodguy65. Massachusetts is the only state that has that requirement for all firearms. Personally, before my boating accident, if my gun wasn’t being worn on me, it was secured. It just makes sense. Then again, my 9 year old knows how to field strip a G19 as well. So there is that.
