What was your first car?

While not exact its pretty damn close. First car was a 1973 Dodge Charger SE with a 318, 2 barrel carb, and headers. I couldn't kill that car...and I tried. Mine had L60s on the back and skinny's on the front. Funny thing about the mopars back then, they had torsion bar suspension and you could get them bouncing like a low rider without much effort. I bounced the front tires off the ground one morning waiting for the traffic cop to let us make the turn to the high school..should have seen his face.

 

1974 Opel Manta. No radio, no A/C, but it did have a 5 speed manual, 5 mph bumpers and fuel injection. The high pressure fuel hoses were prone to leaks which would drip gas onto the exhaust manifold. I was a poor student and drove around like that. I'm amazed it and I didn't go up in flames.

 

Agreed, I liked it so much I later had an '86 Turbo 4Runner and an '89 pickup, the current Tundra marks my fifth Toyota truck.

My second car was a 74 Charger SE with the 400ci, automatic. I wish I had it back.

 

Good looking old truck. I always liked the Fords and Chevy trucks of this era, the 68-72 short bed chevy is my favorite. I love the fact this truck was your grandfathers and now passed to you.

 

Oh man.....89 baby blue Volvo. Handed down to me from my dad....drove that thing into the ground for a couple of years, still drove strong in 2000 when my dad surprised me and traded it in for a 1999 Toyota Tacoma prerunner. (And there began my love for toyota)

 

I had a 71 with original 383 and hideaway headlights I wish I had. Sold it to my uncle for $500 and he drove it off a cliff in Georgia when drunk. Also had a 74 Road Runner with a 360 and a 73 Satellite with a 318. I ran the Charger with 0 oil pressure for about 2 miles when the oil pump went, dropped another pump in it and off she went. Used to float the valves all the time over revving it trying to blow it up. I was extremely hard on that car. By comparison I had a 74 Camaro with a "Corvette" engine it in that toasted the Flexplate, killed 2 transmissions and 2 engines with normal driving.

Those are worth some decent change if they're original and in nice condition. The values have gone up, up, up the past few years, especially the LX notchback.

 

Dude that is one bitching Oldsmobile right there. 1964 was the first year for the GM "a-body", correct??? I'm betting there aren't many of those left, especially in convertible. Don't know the value, but the rare/cool factor would be off the chart now days.

What made you jump ship? Beside the found on road dead or the fix or repair daily

 

Back when I was a wee lad. I had a 1979 Z28, 350, 4bbl, 4spd, T-Tops. I really beat that car to death.

Fix Or Repair Daily. Bought it new, had it in the shop 6 times in 2 years....no thanks. My Chevy by comparison went 200k with nothing but brakes, tires, and oil. Really started to crack at 200k though. Hoping for 300k from the yota

Yep, only things I did to it was headers, hush thrush mufflers, "blow-proof" bell-housing and extra heavy duty clutch+ a 500 cfm Holly carb. Fun, reliable, quick car!

 

You had me at Hush Thrush mufflers. I ran those on my first car, 1970 Monte Carlo. Had a 350 2 barrel that I put a quadrajet on along with headers. Thought I was the fastest thing around. What a tank.

 

My parents worked at the same place on first shift so when I got my license I got to drive our 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme which had the measely 260 V-8 in it. It soon received the name of The Gutless Cutlass. My first car I purchased after I joined the army was a 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE with the V6 in it. That thing was on rails going around corners. First truck I got was a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge. Upgraded in 2003 to an F-150 Supercrew. Put 232,000 miles on that thing. 2 different ford dealerships pissed me off so jumped ship to Toyota in June of 2017 with a Tundra TRD PRO.

 

Sucks your F150 wasn't reliable. I've always loved "the look" of that late 90's/early 00's Ford truck. Especially in reg cab/short box guise, both the straight bed and flareside bed looked great in that config. I really wanted one of those trucks when I was 16 and first received my license. Buddy of mine in high school had one of those trucks, lowered, bright red, reg cab short flareside bed on some 20's, that truck was so damn hot back then, looked liked the Ford Lightning in the 1st Fast and Furious. It wasn't a lightning though, those were stupid expensive back then, but it did have either the 4.6 or 5.4 V8, sounded like Thor's thunder.

 

1993 Prelude 5-spd. Had it during high school and someone stole it when I went off to college. Got it back 6 weeks later and the thief trashed it by spraying the outside with flat black primer, took the dash and door panels off, replaced them with a different set as well as took those apart and painted each piece a different color. Not sure what he was going for other than taking a clean older car and turning it into a worthless pile of crap. Sold it for $1,500 and used it for a down payment on a 1999 Maxima with a 5-spd.

I always had a thing for these preludes. Single head or H22?

 

Oh yeah I loved it. It was a blast and surprisingly, neither. It was the H23 so DOHC but non VTEC. Had intake and header but left the exhaust factory. I had plans for H22 but for obvious reasons it never made it.

 

the h22's were a rare breed. at least for my generation.

 

They were. I managed to come across one here and there and were always scooped up and claimed by the time I found them. Honestly the Maxima I got afterwards was faster and just as fun since it was a manual. You don't come across too many of those either.

 

When I first got my license my parents let me drive their extra vehicle a 1995 Toyota Previa S/C. That thing was a drift machine on dirt. Mid engine, rear wheel drive, supercharged with bald tires.



I had been saving money to buy a car since I was a kid and was looking for a 4Runner or Tacoma. I couldn't find anything good in my price range and needed 4 wheel drive to go snowboarding. I lost patience so I foolishly bought an 01 Subaru Forester. This was my first car that was all mine.

 

06 Scion tC. Great car. Decent power even stock. For in any spot. Hauled a lot more inside than you’d think cuz it was a hatch technically. Miss it!
