What would cause more negative effects if any, 5100 or 6112 at top setting which increases spring compression or less compression on a lower setting with shims which extend the shock?

The reason I ask is on another Tundra forum some say top setting is better than middle with shims and some say opposite. Is one better than the other or is there any real difference to be concerned with?

Friend of mines has shims on the top setting. Rides great. His shop told him it's the better combo. I was surprised seems like it would make for rougher ride, but not the case.

For every post I've read read that the lower clip + shim rides better than the top clip, I've also seen the opposite. When something is that split, the difference is probably negligible.

I am running 5100s on the middle setting with 1 shim on each side. I wanted a ride-height that was between the middle and top setting and middle + shim put the front at 2" of lift (exactly what I was looking for). The ride IMO is better than stock.

If you shim on top definitely install a diff drop. I have seen way too many broken c.v. shafts.

Definitely will and I'm assuming bump stop extenders wouldn't be a bad idea either correct? Thinking middle setting at 1.71" with .5" spacers for a total of 2.21"

Top setting is a bit harsher ride on street, but great when offroad. Personally, I'd go with the top setting, no shims. And with this setup, you shouldn't need longer bump stops since the bottom-out position stays the same. You just get extended travel bc the control arms are extended further at the top of your travel.

On the other hand... If you were to SHIM it, I would get extended bumps bc your shock is bottoming out before the travel (control arms) bottom out.

Yes bump stop extensions would be good. I would go with some wheeler superbumps

So the Boss4x4s website says that the middle setting is 1.71" and Toytec's website says 1.57", which is it?

It's 1.71". 1.57" is what Bilstein lists as the "average lift height." When you crack open the box and look at the installation instructions through, you'll see the actual lift heights specific to that shock.

from bilsteins site, the middle setting for the 5100's is 1.57" and the middle setting for the 6112's is 1.9"

I got 1.5" on the middle setting for the 5100's. maybe the 1.71" was from a different application? :notsure:

the 6112's come with springs that are matched for the shock and for the lift. for the top setting, I would say that the 6112's would be a better choice than the 5100's. on the top setting, the 5100's will have a harsher ride than the 6112's due to the spring compression. if you are only on the street, then 5100's would be fine if you don't mind the harshness. if you are going off road or the harshness annoys you, choose the 6112's. however, the top setting on the 6112's is a higher lift than on the 5100's on the top setting (2.5" vs 2.28"). at 2.5", you are starting to get near the point where UCA's might be recommended.

Was starting to lean to 5100 at the middle and a .5" shim. That should be a little better ride than top correct? I don't offroad heavily mostly dirt, gravel, rocky roads here in the Ozarks. 5100 should handle that right? I may still do 6112 at the 1.9 but there seems to be a lack of them but by the time I'm ready to buy maybe they'll be back around. The OME looks and sounds good but I'm trying to stay at a budget and UCAs would put me over.

yes, the 5100's on the middle with a shim is probably more comfortable than the 5100's at the top setting. however, with the shim, be careful when off roading because you can more easily blow out the shock due to it being compressed beyond its max. just don't go jumping the truck and slamming the front end down. with keeping the lift at or under 2", you should be fine with the stock UCA's and you should be able to get a good alignment.

The 6112's use a 650 lb coil - the stock coil that you would use with the 5100's is ~700 lb. For me the ride with 5100's on middle with a shim is better than stock and I got a little extra height with shim. (I think that the average lift for the 5100's is different for DC and CrewMax and 2wd and 4x4.) I've heard that the 6112's offer a little better ride on the 3rd setting (there are 4 on the 6112's) - i just could not justify the price with doing lift and wheels and tires.

That's kind of me with the 5100 although I'm not getting wheels but tires are still going to be $1,300+ at least. Maybe by the time the 6112s become readily available I might decide to increase my budget but for what I do I think the 5100 will work fine for me. I've still got a little time before my factory tires wear out and I'll go from there just trying to weigh all my options so I can be ready to do it all at once and know what I want.

I was planning on a diff drop and bump stop extensions, that should help me out correct?

even with bump stops and a diff drop, I still wouldn't jump the truck and slam the front end down :)

I don't plan on that, mostly cruising at low speeds enjoying the scenery and still having the mall crawler look :fistbump:
