I have a Blazing Blue Pearl 2018 (see my avatar) and I went to the top body shop in our little town (C&G Auto Body) to get an estimate for having these parts color match painted (as well as the mirror caps).

He told me right off that they can't paint over chrome. I asked about bead blasting for prep and he still said no-go. Same with the plastic mirror caps, can't guarantee adhesion. They are a lifetime guaranteed body outfit and do state-of-the-art work so I figured I'd get the best.

So I'm SOL I guess. I would prefer not to remove myself and send out to those who know how to do this but I'm not sure what to do next. I'll spend the money for this as long as I get quality work.

I may try some other shops in the area. Are there prep notes somewhere on this site (I did a search but I'm not too good at this geeky stuff)?

Just venting I guess. Any thoughts from the gurus here?

Several members here have done this already, on my chrome parts i just plasti-dipped first, then paint should go right on. Or if you like the plasti dip look then there you go. Im sure a 3rd gen that has done this will chime in, good luck brother !

I had my chrome bumper end caps painted. You just have to find the right painter.

A shop should be able to do it. I own a restoration shop and have painted over plastic chrome. You just prep it like normal plastic. Sanding is sanding. Don't know why they wouldn't. If nothing else, order the pieces in black raw plastic and take it to them and have them paint that. Good luck.

Okay, I'm naive. I've seen references to plasti-dip but have no idea what this is. Is this a spray-on prep?

Excellent info! I will look around our little area and see what sort of skills I can find.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I'll get this done one way or the other. I will post pics upon completion.

Plasti dip is like a paint, but once dried can be peeled off

This would be a possibility if I could get it in matching colors. Do auto paint stores carry this stuff?

Have you tried Sparks Toyota for your color matched side mirrors? That is where I purchased my color matched side mirror covers and door handles. 72B32AD1-0F31-4265-8BA9-35CFEE8EB74A.jpg

Ditto. Had chrome sandblasted off and painted. I have not had plastic painted tho so I have no input there.

This. I did my own vinyl wrap on the bumper caps. Probably ran me around $30-40 in total. You can wrap the mirror caps as well, but you might get lucky and be able to match them and avoid wrapping.

I think that I used the 3M 1080 gloss black metallic for mine (your color will differ, of course). The problem with plasti-dip is that it is hard to get the gloss look. The vinyl is a perfect gloss match as you can see below. Also, you can just 'peel' it off if you ever want to change or redo it.

Can anyone give any input on what is a fair price for wrapping bumper caps, bulge and grill surround? Labor only.

Yeah Im looking into the wrap also but local shop website says no guarantee on wrap on chrome, I haven't called for a price yet.

    This is what it says...
Can you wrap a fiberglass or chrome bumper?
A painted plastic bumper can be wrapped without any problems. In the case of fiber-glass or chrome bumpers, application of vinyl on these areas are not recommended or guaranteed to adhere for the life of the wrap.

@DecalsByDesign which vinyl do we use? I want to get rid of the chrome on the cheap, but have it look good. Thinking going with matte black to accent the inferno orange.

I manage a body shop and painted for 26 years. Yes you can paint your chrome bumper ends. It just has to be done right. You have to clean them with the proper cleaner and sand them with 80 grit sandpaper. Then you spray self etching primer on them and then seal them with the appropriate Automotive paint sealer and paint them either base coat clear coat or single stage. I did mine ....20171207_133737.jpg 20171207_133742.jpg 20171207_140246.jpg 20171207_150042.jpg

That's honestly the first I've heard that about vinyl wrap and chrome.

I can promise you that my wrap isn't coming off anytime soon. It adheres VERY VERY well. Just make sure to clean the chrome and then wipe it down with alcohol one time. It's a $30 investment so why not. If you don't like it, you can then do something else more expensive and you aren't out much money.
