Being a tire dealer we run into many customers set on a particular tire or brand. No matter what practical advise we give many can be set in what they want. Which is fine, we always strive to provide whatever the customer wants. So now I would like to hear from you guys which tire do you like better and why. Please keep the comparison to the two tires mentioned, because yes I like the Falken At3w better than both of these.

A little of this and a little of that.
If those were the only two I could choose from I’d probably go with the KO2’s.

A little of this and a little of that.

I’m not super familiar with the Grabbers but I hate the red lettering on the sidewall. They may make them with black lettering on the opposite sidewall but I’ve only ever seen them with the red lettering.

I know several people who are running KO2’s and they rave about them. I also like the tread pattern on the KO2’s a lot better than the Grabbers.

    Always ran KO2. Why?
    1. Previous experience. Go back to what I know. Have worked great in the snow.
    2. Tougher sidewall to protect from puntures, even when aired down (I haven' had a need, but that is what manufacturer claims).
    3. Has severe snow traction rating (little mountain symbol on tire - 3 peak I believe). I don't believe many tires have this.
    4. I like the thread pattern, aggressive and not loud while driving.
    5. Full sipping, supposed to provide better grip.
    6. Larger thread opening to discard rocks easier.
    7. It's the tire/brand a lot of off-road racing teams use, so it has to be good, right?
    Hope that helps.

I am going to try that ATX this fall and winter. All the reviews have been great. Had two sets of Grabbers and they kicked ass in deep snow! Not sure why people hate on General they make a kick ass tire.

The larger siping on the side blocks of the KO2s seems like it might make for a little more traction in really rough terrain, but otherwise they seem fairly identical.

Those ATX Generals are based upon their legacy Competition tires developed especially for Baja a few years back. General has been seen running on Baja racers for quite sometime successfully. Finally started to produce them for the average joes like us. As far as the Red lettering...mount them with Red lettering in. I was told K02's can be a pain to balance by my tire guy. They are popular and he sells a lot them. Lots of guys are running them here!

Between those 2 the BFGs win. Primarily because the tread is more open. Mud is main concern in Texas. Back in the 80s I hated the BFGs and would pull them off a new truck and sell and then buy some mudders. Discount put a set of MTRs and my Tacoma instead of Duratracs. They let me run the MTRs for a while and while they are a super tough tire I could not handle the road noise. Not in to mudding for fun like I use to be. Right now my top choice for a replacement tire is most likely a Cooper St Maxx or maybe a Duratrac. Ran both on my Tacomas. It will probably be Cooper for sidewall strength.

    BFG all day.

Generals are garbage. Have to be inflated to 50+psi offroad so they don't pop while BFG can stay at 30. They're like basketballs.

There's a reason there's no competitive trophy truck team running them. Only ones that are are doing it for free tires. Not to mention they can't make a tire larger than a 37" without having to build a new factory.

Also, look how much the General tire tries to imitate the BFG tread pattern. The BFG pattern has been around for decades.

The ATXs sure do look very similar to the K02 tread..just like the K02 tread is a imitation of the old Desert Dog tires I ran on my 69 Chevy 4X4 back in the day, before the K02s came to be. The General Grabber Competition Tire has been used on numerous successful Baja racing teams although BFG has been dominating for years.

I had issue with General ATX having flat spot if I let the truck sit more for than two weeks. More vibration after one year. Had it Road-force balance a few time. Went back to vibrating again after a couple months of use.

I had the previous model BFG KO. No issue. Ran that for 50K+.

I look forward to trying the ATX out. I'll run the shit out of them. If they suck I will get something else. Had great luck with General in the past.

BFG, on my last truck I got 78k+ miles out of them. Rotate every 5k. Very quiet at highway speeds. I'm a loyal guy to a fault, but until the KO2s let me down, they will be my tire.

I have lots of experience riding on BFG ATs, both the older ones and the relatively newer AT/KO2s. But I have no experience with any General-brand tire, much less these newer ATXs.

I agree that the tread on both look similar, but still notice some differences. The BFGs look slightly more aggressive, especially with the shoulder lugs. The tread on the BFGs also appears to have slightly more spacing. Arguably, these factors may give a slight edge to the BFGs off-road.

With that said, my experience with BFGs off-road is ok. They’re good, but not the best, in my opinion. Duratracs, in my opinion, were slightly better on dry dirt and much better in mud than the BFGs. The BFGs were not that great in the mud here in Texas and Florida when I tried them in those conditions, but to be fair, they’re all terrains and not mud terrains. With the slightly greater tread spacing and slightly more aggressive shoulder lugs, my guess is that the BFGs may do better than the ATXs in the mud, and probably equally as good in dry dirt. But I’ll say I’ve had surprisingly better results with a less aggressive looking tread in mud than with the BFGs when I had Firestone Destination ATs a long time ago on a Tacoma. I don’t think they make the Destination ATs any more, and don’t want to get side-tracked talking about other brands. I only mention them as an example of a less aggressive looking tread performing better than expected in the mud. So it’s possible the same could be said about the ATXs, but it would be better, of course, if someone with experience with them could chime in on that.

On the street, the BFGs perform ok. As their tread wears down, they tend to spin and hydroplane more than others on wet road conditions. I think that’s my biggest complaint about them.

The siping on the ATXs appears to be a bit more in those pics, but it’s hard to tell. Assuming they do have more siping, then I would think they would perform better in wet conditions on the street.

Every set of BFGs I’ve had has had balancing issues, and I’ve had sets on various different vehicles for over 20 years. Don’t know why that is, but it’s just one of those things I expect and just learn to live with. The current set I have right now has a bad shimmy right in between 60-65 mph that the tire shops haven’t been able to address with any amount of balancing attempts. Why did I get them expecting this one might ask? Because I got a good deal on them at the time, I think they’re one of the better looking all-terrains available, and I still lime them. Not sure how the ATXs will fare when it comes to balancing.

Every BFG I’ve had has easily lasted over 50K miles with mostly street driving and occasional trails. When I’ve replaced them with newer sets, I usually have the shop pick the best looking one of the old set to put on the spare rim. This is the main reason I like them. Their tread life lasts a good long time in my experience. I don’t know if that’s because of any proprietary nature of the rubber compound used in these tires or the tread design leading to less wear or a combination of both, but it’s something to consider when having to shell out tons of money every 50K miles for a newer set. I don’t know what the tread life expectancy is for the ATXs, and I suppose their recent release will require us to wait for folks to rack up the miles on these and tell us.

Another thing I like about the BFGs is that when one gets a nail or a screw embedded in the tread, they still work and hardly lose any air. I seem to get a puncture with every set of tires I’ve bought, regardless of brand, and the BFG ATs have held up the best in that respect. I don’t know how the ATXs will fare with nail punctures.

Another factor to consider is how much these tires weigh. The lighter the better for performance purposes, but I don’t know if lighter also means less carrying capacity or somehow affects tread life, longevity and durability.

Since the ATXs are still new, I’d probably go with the BFGs given my familiarity with them. But if, over time, the ATXs prove to be their equal or better, I wouldn’t hesitate to try them if their price is comparable.

I don’t believe I’ve ever had issues with tire balancing on the BFGs. I definitely do not get any shimmies while driving over 60 mph.

Some have never had balancing issues, while others like me have always had them.
