I should have known that you wouldn't be overloaded - I was surprised when I saw the number. Then I saw your second post and realized that I misread it.

 

Interesting, never knew it recommended a WDH for over 5k.

Like others said just split the load if your worried about pushing the truck to much, might be worth the 300$ . I tow my car trailer with vehicle on it and its 6500lbs and I do it without a WDH and the Truck handles it very well and that's traveling 400miles with that load.

i had a dump trailer made from the rear end frame of a dump truck (had the lift and hydraulic parts), and had a body made for it to haul mulch, rock, etc. it has dually type tires, like come on dump trucks and have had 4,500 lbs of rock in it numerous times and pulled it with my tacoma easy. i have no idea how much the trailer weighs but it is stought. i had the box made so that it would ride right with most of the weight close to the axles, it looks ridiculous but it works fantastic. i was only going 5 to 10 miles and i would go back roads and go 40 mph tops, but stopping was way more of a issue than pulling. it is all flat where i am also, wouldn't suggest it in the moutains with the tacoma at all.

 

That sod can double in weight if it gets some rain on it the night before. I threw about 20 rolls of sod (for yard patching) in the back of my 2002 Tundra (payload 1500) and the thing was squating harder than all y’alls newer Tundras with a bag of groceries in the back. Hahaha.

 

The truck can handle it. The question is can it handle it safely? As you exceed the capacity everything that could go wrong increases exponentially.

As an example, last week I overloaded the truck by a lot. Cargo plus passengers and tools I guestimate around 2700lbs. It was only for 6 miles and i was going no faster than 30 mph. There was a dip in the road that I didn't see. Fairly small to be notice at all normally but going that overloaded it felt like a big hit. I looked around and everything seems fine but now the bed is significantly more bouncy than before. I haven't had time to go under to inspect it properly to find what changed to cause it.

Last year I overloaded the truck pulling a four horse trailer full of stuff plus stuff in the bed. Not as bad as last week but quite heavy none the less. Someone cut me off and had to slam on the breaks. The trailer push me a bit and started sliding sideways. If I were driving a little faster I would have jackknifed. I was well under the speed limit. After that, I developed a little vibration on the break pedal. Mention it to the dealer during the regular service and they told me I had hot spots on the rotors. Resurfaced the rotors and it went away.

Both incidents were over short distances and driving well under the speed limit. I have done it before without issues but the risk of something going very wrong is always high.
