    Hey all,
Im going to sod my yard and I am in need of 1240 sqft of sod. I Have a trailer available to me that can carry about 6000lbs. The trailer is about 3500lbs. Ill be saving about 300 bucks for delivery if I pick it up myself. I have a 17 crewmax 4x4 5.7l. I know the numbers say I can tow this. My plan would be to put about 5000lbs of sod on the trailer, 3 pallets and the other half pallet in the bed of the truck about 800 to 1000 lbs. My truck is stock with the tow package. I don't have a w/d hitch nor do I want to buy one since I don't tow this heavy on the reg. I feel like this is a bad idea because I'd be pushing the truck to its max capabilities. What do ya'll think. Easy day for the Tundra or save some grief and spend the 300 bones. I also have no idea what the tongue weight would be with this load and the max for my truck is 980lbs. Also the weights stated above are the max weight for the sod could be lighter depending on how wet it is. Thanks guys.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
I mean, the Manual states that you must have a WD hitch if towing anything over 5k. If it were me though, it would depend on how far, you have to tow it and in what environment. If you are a flatlander, who is towing it less than 20 miles at speeds below 50MPH (you might even be able to go on the highway... I would, but I am less risk averse than most), I would go for it. However, I would not exceed the payload rating by adding the extra sod in the bed. I would just add the extra sod onto the trailer. As I imagine that the tongue weight of a 3500lb trailer + 5800lbs of sod will at least be 1k. That leaves maybe, 400-600lbs for additional sod in the bed.

Make several trips, like @Jsena suggested.

The sticker inside your drivers door will let you know everything you need for load ratings for that truck.

Your tongue weight with that weight will be in the 1000-1140 lbs depending how well it is loaded. It all adds up quickly. I just read a thread on an XD forum on how a guy overloaded his Titan and bent the frame.

Any guesses what this little bit of this rock load weighed?

A little of this and a little of that.

I would have never guessed that much weight! Daymn!!!!!!!

Anyway, do what @Jsena said and make two trips or have them deliver it. It really depends on how far you have to go.

    Have it delivered
They will have a forklift and can spread the pallets out for you. It’s well worth it

I sodded my place in 98. 5000 sq ft. Had them deliver and place the pallets through out the site.

I have overloaded my work trucks many times, but only on short drives. I know it is not the best idea, but sometimes you have to say screw it. I'm going 5 miles! But, I am fairly risky in my life. You make the decision and live with it.

Well based on what everyone has said i think I'll have it delivered. It's a 63 mile trip. I live in va beach. Just no sod farms near by. Definitely dont want to make two trips. Good thing is I told my wife what it would cost delivered didn't even mention picking it up. Thought I'd try and be the hero and save a few bucks. But that ain't worth screwing something up.

    What this means:

13k is the max weight for receiver hitch towing, like a flatbed car hauler.

17200 is the max 5th wheel/gooseneck trailer weight.

23200 is the max both truck and trailer can weigh together.

    Clear as mud? Lol

If it was 5 miles I'd say yeah you could do it it 2 trips. But at 63 miles one way, two trips.... you just spent the $300 on gas.

    Conventional towing.

That was trailer weight and rear axle of truck.

    Trailer 2900 lbs empty
Truck rear axle empty 3100 lbs
Truck axle after load 4500 lbs (so hitch weight was 1400 lbs, almost maxed out).
So my load was 9800 lbs of material.
    Trailer weight rating is 14000.

Now I was really close to being over the rated capacity of my class V hitch with Load Distribution by 100 lbs. if the trailer would have been loaded differently and not so nose heavy (I had two different landscaping materials on the trailer), I could have gone about 1000 lbs more.

Sorry, I didn't see the "with rear axle" part. I just saw 17,200 lbs and assumed that was the material weight.
