I have a majority of Snap-on tools. But, I'm a mechanic by trade. I do have a few Huskey sockets. Damn good in my opinion.

I just went into the phys D lab and talked with our in house torque guru. As I mentioned Snap On is the most common torque wrench sent in for calibration. Doesn't mean it's the best. It is true that a single source makes most of the major torque wrench brands. Snap On, MAC,.....the same. I was told if you pay the $$ you can get a set with your name as the brand. The general consensus here is that most of the brands mentioned have gone down hill quality wise yet have "improved " their tolerances which the techs here are having a hard time bringing into spec. Even new in box wrenches. I forgot about Stahlwille. The best. We do get a lot of Stahlwille wrenches in. Most of the parts we stock are Stahlwille and can use some them on other wrenches. We have lots of Snap On parts that can be used on many brands because they are pretty much the same thing. I posted some pics of tilt blocks that are replaced often, our parts, and torque work benches with the various transducers that are needed to verify the wrenches. I asked what brand the phys D techs would buy............Stahlwille. What brand not to get.......Harbor Freight and Tekton...just added to "do not buy"....Husky and Kolbalt. Apparently Kolbalt ranks last with our torque guys.

I was just shown a typical torque schematic/parts breakdown. It referenced the same parts with different part#'s for 9 different brands. Sheesh...

Sockets and wrenches hold up but the ratchets die pretty quick.
Princess Auto pro point stuff is pretty nice if you want to spend a little more.

What’s your take on manual vs digital? Pros and cons? I want digital just so I don’t have to turn the handle so many times to get it to my preferred setting.

Fortunately, my ratchets are Craftsman from a time when that meant quality. I'll keep Pro Point in mind for when I need new ratchets. I have some of their chain grips and vise grips which are excellent.

We don't get many digital torque wrenches in. They really don't hold up well in everyday commercial duty use. More parts to fail. Very convenient for DIY uses. Our torque guy said the few that come in are usually messed up because of leaking batteries.

John, our torque guru is getting ready to do this 2000 lb-ft torque wrench. The bottom end on this wrench is 300 lb-ft. We can go to 3000 lb-ft.

John does even larger ones. We have a torque multiplier work station that's pretty awesome. Not too many around like ours. John is all excited now. He asked me if I wanted him to show a typical torque wrench being calibrated. Haha. I just may have him do some various setups for you all. He's too busy now. We can do the same with pressure gauges too....Fun stuff!!!!

I actually own a Harbor Freight 1/2" 20 to 150 lb-ft torque wrench. +/- 4%. I bought one and checked it out here at the lab. Out of spec and couldn't adjust into tolerance. Took it back swapped for another one. Same thing. Took it back. 3rd one barely failed at 5% at 150 lb-ft but I was able to adjust into spec. This is why our torque guys don't like them so much.

OK....Here is my Harbor Freighter with typical calibration setup at 140 lb-ft. Read 138.99 lb-ft. Not bad at all. At 140 I'm allowed +/- 5.6 lb-ft. Got lucky with this particular wrench. I happen to like my Harbor Freighter....

Is there a device we can get to check the torque
How would an average Joe check his wrench for accuracy?

The average joe needs to turn it in to a calibration lab. Depending upon range, the non average joe would have to spend a few thousand $$$

Not sure why you would need this. When you set the torque on a wrench it will "break" at your set point. IMO this would be burning money.......

My tool chest is a melting pot of older craftsman that belonged to my father in the 80's, as well as some Husky and Cobalt. I have some Harbor Freight stuff but only for those tools that I bought for a specific purpose and may only get used once every 5 years.

Our torque guys here at the lab are sort of OCD when it come to hand tools that require calibration. IMO for us average joes that DIY...the torque wrenches sold at Sears, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. will suffice. If you have the scratch then kick it up a notch. It really comes down to what you are torqueing and the tolerances required. Everyday use calls for commercial grade torque wrenches because they will hold their tolerances longer. Expensive or cheap...every torque tool requires calibration at least from the OEM and depending on use.....we get some torque wrenches from customers that require bi monthly calibration.
