Any welders here? I am taking my last class in the welding program at my local college. It will have taken me 2 years to complete, but I've really enjoyed it. I'm taking tig welding and it will be complete in May. I plan to make bumpers, gates and really any type of repairs.

I am setup at home for a 220V welder. Will go MIG though. Don't have that much experience but want to practice and build stuff for my truck and home.

Getting a Tacoma a couple years back got me into it to. A good site to learn from is weldingtipsandtricks.com
Yeah mig will pretty much let you build anything you want. It does take practice to make sure you get good penetration on thicker metal. I recently wired in two 220 plugs side by side. One for a thermal arc 211i and a hypertherm 45 plasma cutter. That way I don't have to unplug for using one or the other.

I made this out of some scrap. 3/16 plate. It's just yard art, but man it's heavy. I used mig.

Its for a last name. I made it as a gift for my friends garden. Mig can look very pretty too, not that it has to, but it can. scroll down on this link and take a look at ZTFab's work. Its really nice. All done with Mig. http://weldingweb.com/showthread.php?30845-Mig-like-Tig

I have been thiunking of taking a class and getting into it as a hobby. I would love build stuff for my truck and just general repairs. Little expensive to get into with a new truck in the garage and a wedding in a year....

Been welding since I was 12-13 years old I guess working around race motors and in auto body shops helps a lot. I've been doing a lot of mig welding at work recently and love it but I have always been really good at plain old stick welding and gas welding.

It's worth it in the long run you may pay a good amount in the beginning but after you get going and good at it you can make some money doing it really quickly I actually did some underwater welding several years back it was awesome.

Props if you can make it into a business! I could never make the amount of $$$$ I do with my desk job with fab work.

The 211i is in my opinion one of the best combination welders out there. I love mine! Used it to weld up my DIY front bumper kit from Relentless Fab.

Eric exclusively runs TA machines in his shop. Been in there many times. He has the older 210 Fabricator and a 211i.

Shit I dont know, with how this thing is working now it may be a bit longer til I upgrade. Doing 15sec 45's and 30 second 90's now. I bent a bumper center hoop in only 3 minutes the other day including marking/setup/repositioning.

Cage my truck in a weekend? Unless you are coming over with two of you minions to help out...I don't see that happening. Going to have to cut out my bed cage completely and rebuild that from scratch too.

I'll need your dimple dies too :D

Damn didnt know you were going to that extent. Then again gotta realize who I'm talking to! :p
Yeah, with that much work, you've got a few days easy just into mock up, then a bunch of cross bracing and then another 1/2 day in welding it all out. Big project!

Yeah, bumper to bumper. Cage will stub out to engine cage which will tie to front bumper. Main cage will also stub out to bed cage.
Rough design below. I won't have the center bars in the back tho so i can still see out my rearview...and I won't be using HREW :p

I want to make an angled tire mount. Need to get a welder and rent a bender.
Thinking either Lincoln or miller MIG welders that have gas and 220V.

JD2 or Protools both make great entry level benders. SWAG both makes an air over hydro setup for both that's pretty inexpensive as well. By no means the fastest way to bend tube, but it's not bad, especially for garage fab.
The bender is really not the expensive part, it's the die's.
