Need help...can't open tailgate after pop & lock install

Hi guys, this is embarrassing but I realized what I did. I was installing the Pop & Lock and after I connected to the wires, I did a quick test and it was working. My wife was all excited and closed the tailgate to see it work...however I did not finish putting everything back together. The rods were connected, but the clips were not attached and when she closed the tailgate, the rods popped out and now I can't open the tailgate. The other problem that makes this a giant mess, is that I have a Bakflip MX4 cover on and so I'm locked out of the bed of my truck. I'm really trying to avoid having to call and pay for a locksmith or go to the dealer and was wondering if you guys have any ideas? Does anyone know any tricks to get the MX4 cover off while everything is closed?

 

Yikes! If the rods aren’t connected the tumbler probably isn’t either. Not sure a locksmith is going to be able to open it neither. Let us know how it goes. Good luck bud.

 

I took a few pics to maybe generate some ideas. I would attemp to access from the front...pics 3 and 4. Maybe use a screw extractor to remove the 2 bolts that secure the cover to the rails. Challenge here is the entire thing spinning together once loosened. You’ll destroy a few parts but I’d expect them to be cheap and easy to replace. Trying to break in from the tailgate side could really mess up your cover. Bottom line, you have to open that cover.

 

If you can get those bolts out you should be able to open the cover in reverse. You can’t completely flip each panel as shown, but hopefully you can get just enough room to pull the cables as you go along.

I've never tried it before, but you could try pushing the rear panel to one side. The latches only slide under the rail by about 3/8" so you might have enough wiggle room to move the panel far enough to release the latch on one side allowing you to get at the release cable and open the cover. If that doesn't work you might be able to try using something as a wedge between the cover and tailgate. If you can get enough clearance you might be able to hook the cable with something like a metal coat hanger to release the latches. Good luck!

 

Alright, so I finally got it taken care of. Thank you guys so much for the responses! I was finally able to get the cover open by prying up the cover a little and sticking a coat hanger in and unlocking the latch. And now I was able to finish up the rest of the install. Love this new addition. Again, thanks guys!
