00-20 Oil?

On my 2018 Tundra Limited 5.6L the manual says use 00-20oil use a heavier oil when towing. I tow a boat or camper any suggestions on oil weights?

 

Depends on where you're located and how much your boat and camper weigh, but a 5w30 or 5w40 would be my recommendation.

Read the manual it says 0–20. And if you tow 5–20. But then it says if you do run 5-20 you need to switch it back to 0-20 on the next oil change. Something along those lines. I just run 0-20 and call it a day.

 

I towed a 6000 lb trailer across the country and the 0-20 mobile1 oil worked perfect. Had it analyzed after and everything was fine.

 

I run 5W- 20 only. The 5 is the viscosity upon startup, so just slightly thicker upon startup than the 0. Still I have considered running 5w-30 as 20 weight just sounds too thin to me. However there have been many Tundras with high miles running that oil, so who knows...

 

0w20 is spec'd because of CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards, in addition to the slight mileage increase it's well suited to urban driving. I don't believe running 0w20 while towing is an automatic death sentence for your motor (as ChrisTRDPro's UOA shows), but there is a strong argument for the protection provided by a higher viscosity oil if you are towing heavy in hot environments.
