gearing question

So I’m working on my tundra build so far I have the bed bullet lined, console safe and usbs coming in the mail, and on the list for the bakflip tonneau cover group buy. After I pay all this off I plan on starting g to order in wheels tires and lift. Originally was planing on icon six speeds with 285/75’s and no gear increase. Now after getting jealous with everyone her running 35/315’s I’m leaning toward 315/70/17’s and waiting for the icon rebounds to come out.

So .....

My question’s are, (1)should I stick with 285/75/17’s or upgrade to the 315/70/17’s? If I do that I’m planning on going the 4.88 gear route only because I ride my bitches hard and Park em wet. If the speed limits 45 going up a steep hill I’m prolly doing more like 55 so I think gearing for me will help lessen some wear and tear. (2) What are the risks with doing the gears? Should I be overly worried about a mechanic doing it half ass or wrong or is it a fairly simple job? (3) who has the best rated gears ie icon, Yukon, g2 or any other brand?

I think that’s about it I’m sure I’ll think of more at an inconvenient time lol. Thanks in advance

Edit: also I live in upstate ny so the roads I travel are hilly back country type roads, not like the flats of the west lol

 

You don't really need 4.88s for 35s if you're not towing (ie. as long as you have the tow package because it comes with 4.3 gears for your truck).

Only Nitro and Yukon makes the 4.88s for our trucks and you can't go wrong with either. On 35s and 4.3 gears, your speedometer is just under 5mph off at around 50mph.

That being said.. I have the Nitro 4.88s and TRD supercharger on my truck while running 40" tires. The truck feels slightly better than stock, especially considering all the mods done to my truck and extra weight.

 

Wow sounds like a beast lol. I’d love to supercharge mine but I couldn’t swing that cost lol. I’ve read here a lot of people don’t do gears and that’s it’s not really needed and some people like I believe dirty deeds is a firm believer that they need to be done more so out of fun factor lol. I’m just looking out for longevity of life for the truck. When I did my Tacoma I did 285/70/17(I believe?) and it would constantly shift between 4th and 5th gear and the transmission felt like it was slipping into 5th at times and o my hhad 25k miles with those tires and stock 4.10 gears. I attributed this to the heavier tires, driving like a jackass, and towing with it in 5th.

 

After spending all that $ it’s only one more mod to make it drive better than stock if you use the smaller tires you listed above and run 4.88, just sayin
