    Brand new to forum...

So I've been looking and looking for a Toyota truck that would bridge my work (carpentry) and family life (camping). Up until now, I was thinking of the Tacoma and 4Runner. The 4Runner because it is fully enclosed (suv) has always been my first or second choice. The Tacoma for gas mileage, and utility of course. Well now I'm to the point where I really like the first gen Tundras. To me they look better than the bulky 2nd gen's Tundras and more utilitarian than the smaller Tacoma's, more svelte is the best way i could describe it. Anyhow, I'm hoping to pick up a 2005/2006, without rust issues, low mileage/owners. I plan on keeping truck for a long time and doing minimal mods to it (small lift, tires, shell, stereo). This is one of the few I'm interested in...

Looks like a good truck. I would go Tundra, and I have owned all three.

    Hi, Ray. Welcome from SoCal!

I've got a 3rd gen Tundra and a 2001 4Runner. If I could find a low mileage 1st gen Tundra with no rust, I'd find a way to buy it, so that's my vote. Good luck and keep us posted.

The mileage on the Tacoma really isn't very good, and worse after upsizing tires

I had an 06 Double Cab 4x4 Tundra and I got 16mpg in town with it, so the gas mileage isn't any different than the 4runner. I have an 03 V6 4runner that got 16 when stock and gets about 15 now once I lifted it and put a wider tire on it.

Go with the Tundra, you won't regret it. It's more powerful than the Tacoma and gets just as good mileage. Just remember if you are picking one up with over 90k miles, you need to either verify the timing belt has been replaced or factor that cost into it. If you pay to have that done, you are looking at about 700.00 for timing belt and water pump replacement, parts and labor.

    Good luck!

Hey E1. Thanks for the welcomes. I'm definitely moving towards the Tundra even though every time I walk past a 2nd Gen 4Runner I have 2nd thoughts. Anyhow, here are a few of the Tundra's I'm looking at now. As they are all some distance from me, I waiting on undercarriage pictures from most of them. The first one in brown seems nice (doesn't have TRD). Is is hard to repaint the fading black window strips on the driver's side door???

This one in Red, another AZ car, is pretty nice too.

    https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/inventorylisting/mySavedListings.action#listing=206001887

This one, in my favorite color with 70K miles and TRD, is another I'm waiting on undercarriage pics from. It's the closest to me in Southern Cal but has had four owners and they lived in NY and PA some of the time so not hoping for much on this one.

Welcome from Oregon...I have had 3 Runners, and although they are a great vehicle I would go with the Tundra due to reasons already mentioned.

I’ve had all 3 also and I’d also say tundra, then 4Runner. I wouldn’t ever get a Tacoma again that was just a dumb mistake.

Colors I like in order of preference. White, Desert Mica, Red (Salsa Red?),

Heres pics of undercarriage for the TRD one in UT. Any red flags besides what I've noticed and didn't notice?

I use to live in OC and the cars and trucks out there are always good. Mileage on the other hand is a different story. You need a vehicle in Cali for sure. Keep looking and there was a frame recall on these so if it might be elligible for that too

Those pics looks like they sprayed it with undercoating to hide the rust. I see lots of oil leaks too. I would have to pass on that one. So far, the white one in CA is the best priced for the miles. The two for 15900 with over 100k are too much in my opinion, but I realize it all depends on the location. Different zip codes will value differently.

Yeah, I noticed the undercoating spray as well. I'm staying far away from that one. The two for 15900 are pretty cool but I want low mileage/trd. The salespersons sent me shots of the undercarriage on those and they looked clean, particularly the brown one. It's helped me to really get a good idea of what it should look like under there. I'm probably just going to just stick to my guns and continue to wait for what I really want. Low mileage, good condition, trd, 2006,

I agree, hold out for exactly what you want. That way you have no regrets. In the meantime, you can watch pricing and get an idea of a good price when you see it.

I used autotrader to find mine and drove 300 miles one way to get it. I rented a car one way, then drove the truck back. I have done that a few times over the years.

I've owned all 3; get a Tundra or a 4Runner. If you must get a Tacoma, go with a 2015 or earlier. The Gen 3 Tacomas (2016-present) are, in my opinion, awful trucks.

Welcome from San Diego. I've owned all three, the last being a Tacoma, and would vote for the Tundra. 4Runners are great rigs but you are always left feeling like you should have bought a truck. I loved my Tacoma but ran out of room and towing capacity quickly. As others have mentioned, the gas mileage was surprisingly low. I ended up selling it and buying a Tundra. Never looked back.

Hey E1, Just wanted to update. I've actually found a couple ( 2006 Tundra's) that had fairly low mileage, 4x4, TRD, sustained care by one or two owners, and no serious rust issues. It takes time to find them now. The two cars I found were sold within a day or two. The second one I really liked but both the salespersons I was working with had the next day off after I discovered it. That day it sold:mad:.
I'm presently looking a white 2006 with 33K miles but no TRD (should I compromise on this?). Haven't confirmed on rust issues with pictures from dealer yet. I would like to raise it slightly and put on better tires as well as shell.
