I purchased a 2018 Crewmax TSS off road tundra last week. I traded in a 2015 f150 ecoboost that was constantly in the shop and I wanted reliability. I researched tundras online and found that the max payloads varied from 1450 to 1560 which is fine for my needs as I tow a 7k travel trailer 2-3 times a year 100 miles each way. I made a mistake and did not check the max payload sticker on the truck I purchased until a few days later as I expected it to be within the online limits from Toyota...boy was I wrong. It reads max payload of 1265 and then another sticker states an additional 173 lbs need to be subtracted for modifications which leaves me at 1092 max payload. My ford had 1740 lbs max payload and my wifes minivan has 1322. I cant fathom how any half ton truck would have such a low payload. This basically makes it impossible to tow the trailer with my family without being significantly overloaded....its not possible to carry 4 men, gear in bed and a kayak or two to fish in this thing which I can do in the minivan. Is there anything I can do or do I need to dump this thing and go back to ford? Help!!

Not sure on the payload specifics, but I wouldn’t dump the Tundra so quickly. I’m betting there’s some piece of info that’s missing in this equation.

Well I am guessing I could dump the 20 inch tss wheels, ko2's and the nerf bars and get most of the 173 lbs back. Be nice if they gave a description on what was added to get it down from 1550 to 1265 in the first place. Thanks for the replies

If I’m not mistaken (look at the capacities chart in your owners manual, it will show the differences) 1550 payload is for a 2wd doublecab. 4x4 and crewmax both count against you.

Well, you could always take the minivan. Look at all the miles and wear and tear you will be saving on your new Tundra?

I’m kidding bud, and this is a problem that can be resolved, but you may not like the answer. However, it does make me want to test the minivan theory out with the towing.

You are correct on what you “legally” have in capacity with your 2018. I made a similar mistake with my 2012 Tundra as well, but mine was reduced to 1320 lbs. I feel your pain.

So this is what I would do:

-Have one of your favorite beers and relax. Cigars are optional.

-Weigh your truck like you suggested and see what comes of it. Then decide what you want to do. At this point, I would probably grab another beer when you get home.

-After you realized this was a total waste of your money at the CAT scale, you probably will become even more irate that you need a different truck. A smart person would get rip roaring drunk at this point. Remember not to drive, your gonna need that Tundra in pristine condition.

-This is when you start looking at bigger trucks and pay close attention this time at load capacity stickers on the actual truck. Don’t buy a Chevy, I was recently informed they are POS garbage. Just looking out for ya brah and passing on some 411. I would also just skip over a 3/4 ton and go single rear wheel 1 ton. I personally know a few people in your shoes with 3/4 ton diesels. See, they made even a more expensive mistake by at least 20000.00 and we even told them to get the F350. I mean, how stupid would you feel dropping 63000.00 on a truck you can’t even use for a business due to having a 1984 lb capacity rating and your friends even showed you on paper. Bet you feel tons better now. See what I did there?

-Wash and wax the Tundra, your going to love the high resale value everyone brags about.

-Sell your Tundra. This might be tricky since it’s so new. I would try to sell outright before trading in. I would just lie my ass off and say it was a dear friend that passed away and your selling it for his widow. I would probably say he was a hero saving a kitten or something and He only got to use it once. Anyone with a pulse will buy it.

-Go buy the right truck (get the leather interior..trust me) get a babysitter for Friday night, pick up wife and take her out to dinner in your new truck. Make sure she gets tipsy and show her a good time by taking her out dancing, a romantic walk, kiss her neck, even rub her shoulders. Personally, I would try and get some action in the new truck (leather interior rocks)...break that bad boy in properly. I would play it off remembering when you were young and wild. If it wasn’t her when you were wild and young, scratch that horrible idea. After she finds out how much money you wasted out of the kids college fund, you might not get any action for a bit. Since Craigslist casual encounters section and Backpage all together has been shut down, I would sign up for Ashley Madison.

So yeah, that’s what I would do. Remember what I said about the Chevy.

Where is the sticker? I should check mine. I would have just gone with what is said online of 1560lbs

Funny but it seems like drastic overkill to buy a 1 ton to tow a camper 100 miles twice a year when the ecoboost was more than enough. After doing research today it appears the tundra is reliable and has nice resale but that’s about it. It guzzles gas and can’t tow or haul anything beside groceries. I’m gonna get a beer now...Shocked that a truck in 2018 is this I’ll equipped and incapable.

We all have opinions. I’ve towed well above the posted tow rating w/ a Tundra and it handled it pretty well, but that doesn’t make it smart to do. I’m of the opinion that they pull better than any other 1/2 ton. But there’s also many good reasons to buy a 3/4-1 ton for pulling a travel trailer.

Yep. Payload on these trucks is weak. Very weak. Especially the CM.

I'm confused (since I don't tow anything), are we talking bed payload or towing capacity? Thought it could tow up to 10,000 lbs.

Payload. He has only 1000ish lbs to play with. Depends on the tongue weight on the trailer - let's guess 500ish lbs. That leaves around 500 lbs of payload. Throw yourself and your family in, you have nothing left for gear and such.

The payload on these trucks isn't great. The regular cabs and the double cabs are ok. But the CrewMax is just heavy.

I see an awful lot of CrewMax "overlander" builds that are I bet are almost all over GVWR. You just can't add much to these trucks. Payload limited. Maybe that is what the "Limited" edition means....:stirthepot:

The original poster is discussing both. He compares Ford payload (a truck that he just sold because it was ‘always in the shop’)) to the lower payload Tundra (that he just bought and didn’t research prior) and questions whether to go back to a Ford (that will be in the shop). ‘Things that make me wonder’.

You are right from my memory about the 10,000 lbs ‘towing’.

A solution would be for the original poster to throw all his gear in the camper. He has 3000lb to work with.

I’m not sure about throwing wife and kids in there. My other solution is to dump the nerf bars (~55 lbs), leave the tailgate (55-60 lbs)at home and put the spare (50-75lbs?) in the trailer for the 1-2 times a year I tow. Might still be a little over but much closer. :)

There’s a huge difference in towing amount and max payload. I only have 1100 lbs of payload to work with before I am over loaded. Family is 510 lbs and hitch is 50 which puts me at 560. 7000lb trailer at 10% hitch weight is 700 lbs. I have equalizer hitch so some of the weight will be transferred back to trailer but it’s a small amount and that theory is debatable. That puts me right at the original max payload of 1265...

I appreciate the fact that you are actually stopping and thinking about this. Most people don't pay any attention to it and just load the bejeebus out of their vehicles.

I need to strip it down to bare essentials and have it weighed. I didn’t have to worry about it when I had 1740lbs max payload in the pos Ford. Sticker says 6200 lb dry but I’m guessing there’s a few additional lbs added in there from the dealer. I only need one propane tank and could put that and the batt in the trailer to reduce tongue weight. It’s gonna be border line but they say the tundra does tow well. I’m amazed at all the pics I see of tundra crewmax hauling 30+ foot travel trailers. I can only guess they are over loaded or have no kids??

There isn't anything "legally" that you can do. Your GVWR is what it is.

Now, there are some things that you can do to upgrade your truck and make it handle the weight better. I have been thinking about doing this myself. But, I just don't know if I want to go down that rabbit hole. It just isn't the right platform.
