Ugh! I'm glad you're pleased (and it IS pretty cool seeing the detail at the eye sockets! I can't recall seeing a skin in that condition before).

My son and I are still "rattled". Just got home from a walk at San Diego Mission Trails. We were walking on pavement back to our car when I spotted this guy, a red diamondback, just ahead along our path, on my son's side.
    IMG_4178.jpg

Worst was, I immediately and silently reached for my son who immediately recognized my action signaled danger but guessed it was something on the roadway side, and immediately moved away from the roadway toward the snake! I got 'hold of his arm and practically lifted him across in front to my other side.

Haha! I know there was little danger of striking without coiling up, but it was a visceral response. Our movement telegraphed danger to others in the area (many of whom had walked right by), then a crowd gathered to take pics..., which was encouragement enough for this guy to move off into the brush.

Fuck. That. I hate snakes so much that I couldn’t even bring myself to touch the shed.

This one was from a rat snake, probable a bull snake, I just call them rat snakes, he is harmless and eats mice and other rodents so they are gtg.

There are rattlers to the south of me about 15 miles, I have only seen one in my AO and it was a pygmy, on a trail I used to walk to get to a hunting spot.

nice rattler..my 10 y.o son loves snakes. Each time we go to a petting zoo, he grabs the biggest constrictor one and put it around his neck

Ugh! I'm careful not to telegraph any fears I have to my kid, so he grows up careful but not phobic-- but am pretty sure my automatic reaction made an impression on him. His legs were shaking for half an hour after, til the adrenaline rush subsided. I'm (not so) secretly pleased he's not an arachnid, reptile or rodent lover. :angrygirl:

Me too! After my brief super-mom reaction, we moved away slooowwwleee. Glad it was no big deal, and a wake up for the rest of my family (who didn't grow up running wild through brush like I did, always alert for snakes).
