Going down to 17" from 18" wheels?

2016 Tundra 4x4 crewmax 18" stock wheels, is it possible to go to a 17" wheel if it came with an 18" wheel from dealer?

 

Yes, but you would have to buy a new set of wheels as well as a set of tires.

 

And make sure you get bigger tires to match old diameter or your speedometer will be off. And welcome.

 

I believe you can go smaller or bigger but only a 3 size difference from stock cause if you go too big or too small, you will mess up some sensors. I put 325 tires on mine and the navigation was unable to tell my location. It was always a few streets off.

The nav wasnt working? What does the nav have to do with the wheel sensors? Nav is done by GPS

I was puzzled too. Perhaps the member had some sort of electrical short somewhere.

 

Im not sure what it was but I brought it to the dealer and they told me that because i put tires 4 size bigger than stock it might have broke a sensor and they didn't want to repair under the guarantee. The gps still worked but it was just recalculating all the time.

 

What tire size do you have? There are so many people with upsized tires without an issue.

 

I had goodyear duratracs 325/65/r20.

 

That's almost 37 inches in diameter. Do you mean 325/65/18?

My tires are not as big at 295/70/18 (34.5 inches in diameter), but I do not see any difference in navigation operation.

 

Aside from the coveted 17" Rock Warrior rims from Toyota, I've heard that Method Wheels makes 17" rims that fit over the Tundra's big brakes, and Pro Comp makes the La Paz 17" rim that fits over the brakes.

 

Mind if I ask why they are coveted? I just bought my rock warrior a few days ago and have the 17" forged TRD/rock warrior? wheels. I'm a newb in toyota world. Just asking to learn

 

They're not only one of the few 17" rims that fit over the Tundra's big brakes, they're also the only 17" OEM rim Toyota has offered for the Tundra. And unlike some of the less aesthetically looking stock rims Toyota has offered, the Rock Warriors actually look pretty decent. Plus, Toyota OEM rims are known for being fairly strong, even the ones that aren't that popular in the looks department. The Tundra TRD Pro that ran the Baja 1000 a few years ago was set up with those rims, even though they were no longer offered the year the Pro came out, or at least I don't think they were. I don't know if Toyota offers them for sale anymore, and they still fetch a pretty good price used, which is why I referred to them as "coveted."

 

Thank you! I didn't know any of that. Question, are all of the trd wheels forged? Or just the rock Warriors? Mine have the word forged stamped into them. I know the difference between forged and not. Curious if they all come that way though.

 

I don't know if the rest of them are forged.
