Well...here goes nothing. Being that I live in one of the coolest states for site seeing and overlanding I thought I would catch onto the new Overlanding Craze. I am taking my 2014 TRD SC’d Platinum and making it into an Overland vehicle. This has been my baby...it is maintained every 5,000 miles and cared for better than some of my children (jk).

    The setup currently is:

BDS 4.5” Lift with Fox 2.5 Coil Overs on the front - 2.0’s on the back
    TRD Supercharger
20” Fuel Hostage 2 piece wheels with 35 X 12.5 Toyo RT’s (will change to SCS or Method 18’s)
    46 gallon TransferFlow aftermarket tank
    Rigid Fogs
    2018 OEM LED Headlights
    30” X Vision LED Bar
    Bedrug

Installed today Leitner Rack System - 2 Rotopax - 1 Storage Bin - Maxtraxx (on order)
Installing tomorrow Mt. Denali CVT RTT.

    Coming:
    Decked bed storage system
    Expedition One Front Bumper

This is the rack system....curious to see what the Mt. Denali looks like. I have to be honest I am a little scared that the tent may look a little funny being how dang big it is. But I have some pretty big boys.

    What else does everyone recommend?

Only thing I recommend is to put money into being more off-road capable (suspension, armor, navigation, tie down points for your bed etc etc etc) and try and get a lot off-road experience before dumping a ton into the “insta-landing” stuff. All the “cool” looking gear isn’t needed or do much good if you’re not wheeling tough places, which is hard without properly building your truck.

What do you recommend for suspension upgrades? I am limited because of the 4.5 BDS lift. Let me know if you would.

Bout time! Great looking truck. I like that you already decided to go down to a smaller wheel. Are you going to stick with Toyo RT's, or different tire? Love my STT Pro's. They suck for gas mileage and are a little noisy, by they have already earned their keep getting through some nasty Utah mud.

Do you have any aftermarket skids? Maybe start with an engine skid. I picked up the RCI engine skid in steel.

What steps do you have? Have you thought about going with rock sliders? Even if you don't drive trails that are bad enough to actually need rock sliders, a normal step can be limiting on average trails. I bent two sets before I went with sliders. Or you could always go no steps/sliders if you don't mind jumping in and out.

    OP has open bed.
If he plans to put a decked storage unit on, he can make a couple bucks off the rug.

I’ve checked out @Spvrtan and I love his truck! I don’t think I will sell the wheels...I think I will keep them to use on different types of trips.

And I love my BedRug. It will stay in there. I will be putting our Decked system over the BedRug....you dont need to use the shims when you do it that way.

your RTT sits too far off the rear most horizontal bar. its past the recommended overhang from a support bar and wouldnt recommend much of any weight sitting on it. You also risk pulling out the opposing end bolts/nuts and damaging the flooring from supporting the tilt angle.

i had a custom bed rack built that had an additional hoop off the rear to support the mt denali. i ended up selling the mt denali as it was too big and didnt like the overhang for me.

It sits less than the 24” that CVT recommends. Its actually like 15”. It ovehangs on the front too. I have big boys so I’m really not interested in changing the tent size.

CVT only supports <14" overhang. I havent heard they support a 24" overhang. But 15" is pretty close.

That is what they told me when I ordered the tent, but then I may have misunderstood them. Nevertheless they knew exactly what truck it was going on because they had me buy the extra crossmember too. 350E0345-5B89-44D2-923E-6BB50F910DF5.jpg CVT talked me into going with that size. I just went out and measured it because in the picture it looks like the overhang is a lot greater than 16”. I am actually at 16 3/8” overhang. The overhang is pretty well balanced (about the same overhang on both ends) on that rack so I dont see how its going to pull the other opposite side bolts.

This is exactly why I chose this rack vs. the others is because of its height and its overall load capability.

First off, I'm not some expert. My time offroad is relatively limited, but I wheel with guys with a lot of experience and I've soaked in as much knowledge as possible. I also beat on my truck and know whats important to have on trips vs whats just nice to have.
I know you're already running the bracket lift but it's not most capable setup. If you're set on sticking with it so be it. The 2.0s are not gonna cut it... I'm running 2.5s and have had to rebuild them 2x already in less than 25k miles. It's just not enough shock for full size truck carrying a bunch of extra weight. I'm not sure why you want to keep your bed rug... I had one originally and quickly ditched it for a sprayed liner and bolted in tracks for multiple tie down points. The decked storage system... I can have a few guys chime in who wished they never wasted time on that. I mean I can go on but you'd be wise to find a build log of a guy who legitimately wheels their truck and knew what they were doing with their build. I wheel with some awesome guys who helped me build my truck as best possible with my budget.

The best advice I can give you is get out a couple times. I went on a few trips with guys who actually pushed their trucks to make sure the off-roading life was for me before dumping even more cash into it. Are you cool with destroying your paint job? maybe thrashing your wheels? truck damage? maintenance? etc etc? If not save some money, a lot of money. And if you only plan on taking your truck places where you don't have to worry about anything happening to it you really don't need all the cool overlanding stuff anyways; or just get a trailer and be done with it. There's plenty of guys on forums and IG that have all the bells and whistles of overlanding but really don't do anything except look cool on social media on paved fire roads. Don't be the guy who buys all this crap then just goes to parking lot meets with a pretty truck because he's afraid to wheel it... or do if that's your thing. If you're serious go through some of the builds of the SGU guys or something. Trust me do it right the first time and save a lot of money and headaches.

Have you talked to Fox about what they can do for a 2.5 rear shock to work with your lift? Maybe see how your stock leaf springs carry all the extra weight and how often you'll have all that extra weight loaded before looking to upgrade those. Other than that, your suspension should be good for normal overlanding.

Yea, you should be willing to take some scrapes and scratches when off-roading, overlanding, but that doesn't mean you need to beat the shit out of your truck to have a good time or get to some cool places. You're not going to be throwing your truck all over the road/trail if you're driving high mountain passes and shelf roads in Colorado or crawling across Utah slickrock, for example. Some desert or mountain pin striping is expected. You already have the sleep system, which really is step #1 for any type of camping/overlanding beyond a vehicle that actually runs. I like keeping things as light and simple as possible. All my gear, etc. goes in plastic bins. I don't know enough about drawer systems to give an opinion, but I would suggest considering the bin option. It's easy, light, cheap, temporary. 18/17" wheels so you can get a little more sidewall would be the first thing I would do.

I'm hoping to make a couple trips in the Book Cliffs once the roads dry out. Maybe one in the Henry Mountains or to the Doll House in the Maze. Wanted to get to the North Rim GC, but don't know when I'll be able to get there. Oh yea, San Juans in Colorado and maybe a trip to Mexico. Hmmmm. Gonna need more time!
