I can’t decide if I should keep modding the tundra for high speed off-road or save the money and buy another vehicle as a toy and use that off-road and the tundra as a hauler. It would make 3 vehicles if I get another one and insurance ain’t cheap, limited space on military bases as well for car parking. What do y’all think? Money won’t be an issue as it’s a dual income home and almost debt free, suggestions?.....

Man, that's a tough call. It'd be nice to have a Taco to play with 'cause there are so many shops making stuff for 'em. Tacos fit places that are difficult for the Tundra. For me, it's just the Tundra for now.

Personally, I would build a dedicated go-fast rig.

@831Tun yea old gen tacos, 4runners, maybe a Landcruiser or FJ cruiser would be nice and make them LT as they’re cheap now. @ColoradoTJ, I think I might do that, so if I break it the tundra and trailer will be waiting for me and I won’t have to Uber my way out. @TheBeast yea it’s deserted but I love the open desert I’ve been speeding almost everywhere on this base. Funny story....I’m back on stocks because I bent 1 wheel going too fast off-road, I made a post about it. I’m saving up for some 17” or 18” wheels with 35’s and a full sized spare. Let me know next time you pass by and I’ll come give you a hug and a fort Irwin T-shirt

I learned a long time ago, if your really going to have fun off-road, you just can't use your daily driver that you rely on every day.

Yeah build a toy, I have a daily and my solid axle toy and its the best of both worlds.

Keep the Tundra more or less stock.

I saw that bent/ broken rim:(. If I had it to do over I'd get 17" wheels 'cause the tires are cheaper and I think the extra sidewall helps protect the wheels as well as providing a cushier ride. Just my opinion.

@ColoradoTJ, yes it makes sense. @SnowroxKT yes, its a peace of mind knowing I can go all out on a dedicated off road rig cuz I'll have the tundra to tow it home if it breaks. @csuviper yup, definitely looking into that. @831Tun yea and I need a drone, most of my "good" moments are the ones that dont get video'd or captured on pics, I think I am going with a 17" wheel but keep my stock 20's for when I do afford an off road toy they'll go back on as theyre a better size for towing. sorry @JoshuaA, google has lots of those pics for your viewing pleasure

I say get a toy. But remember you may have to go retrieve that toy with your truck. So you may want some aggressive tires at a minimum. Maybe a small lift for a little ground clearance and some skid plate protection as well as sliders. I say you spend money on both.

how about one of those can am/ Polaris side by side as a toy ? tow it behind your Tundra to location then start ripping the desert with it :)
no insurance too. off road only and plenty of BLM land there.

I vote get a toy. It's much more fun to not worry about breaking your daily when offroading. I looked in to getting a side by side as a toy, but quickly came to the conclusion that I could have a pretty bad ass Toyota crawler and a trailer for less than a new side by side, and would still have the option to drive the yota on the road if I need to. That being said the new Can am and Polaris side by sides are some nice machines.

@easleycrawler nice toy you got there and the tundra looks good!. @Adam funny thing is that dude took my parking spot at home, i was ready for a fight if he wanted to start some shit but he just moved the car that was in front of him. @15whtrd yea im still gonna mod the tundra to offroad with until I can afford a toy, its leveled already just need some meaty tires and smaller wheels. @TheBeast ,@Prostar 190 and @JH5370 thanks for the suggestions, theres something about having a full sized toy that if i want to camp and offroad anywhere I could, those small can ams and polari's look fun but like JH5370 said I could go on the road if I have to. I might be crazy enough and buy another older 3rd gen tundra and mod it, I like seeing people be amazed by a full sized truck going fast and going places they wouldnt think it would make it.

Miss my taco for just that reason, it could out manuver my tundra. But I would never go back to a taco unless I could keep the tundra as well. Absolutely love my tundra and don't plan on going back anytime soon.

I have a toy and am making poor life choices by modding my truck. I’ll tell you this: some of the most memories I have of wheeling are when someone’s shit exploded and that’s the thing we were driving home. Did it suck? Yep. Pretty much the worst thing ever, at that time. Afterwards though, Best stories drinking beer around the campfire.

Funny story, and you’ll get the point at the end since you have a decent build on your Tundra already.

Many moons ago (05 or 06), the group we went to Moab all had some epic failure on the first day (drive shaft, gear set, transmission, etc). We all got back to Canyonlands at a decent time. The next day we went out looking for parts. We ended up finding a transmission, but it was probably not going to work well. It was left out in the elements.
This was supposed to be a week long trip, but by day 3, we were getting rather bored. We started looking at our tow rigs and had the bright idea of “hitting some easier trails” with them. I have to admit, normally I did not put bigger tires on tow rigs, but I was rather glad I had 295’s on my Dodge. We had a great time doing more scenic trails, getting into some sand and of course the Moab mud you can never get off. By the end of the week, I had seen things in Moab that I would have never seen otherwise.

    Sometimes shit happens....

Tundra as a daily driver/tow vehicle. Buy a dedicated offroad vehicle. If it stays strictly offroad and not street legal you wont need insurance. And if you're not in debt now, you will be. Cheers.

@the_midwesterner yea it’s still a tough choice but I gotta keep in mind “I still have to drive it home” if I don’t get a toy so my fun would be limited. @ColoradoTJ damn! Yes some of the best memories come from the “worst” times, dedicated off road rig it is. @Baja Mike haha yea, I’m thinking of a 5th gen 4Runner either 2011-2014 trail or off-road whatever it’s called now. I don’t plan on being in debt anymore and first few mods would be king shocks all around, bigger tires and sliders not particularly in that order and only when I can afford them. Like they say most times it’s skill of the driver, not the mods that make a difference.

I know you're more a "go fast" guy than a rock crawler. If you want to build a dedicated go fast truck, you'd realistically need a good chunk of change. You could do a lot more putting that money into your tundra and do it for way less. If you were crawling, that would be a different story. Plus, trailering a rig is a pain in the ass. Just get in the tundra and go.

I may be in the minority here, but use the Tundra to get to some nice trails, set up a base camp, and trail bike around. Two wheels are always more fun ;-)

Yea that is the struggle, I love it and a 3rd vehicle would be a pain in the ass to park considering I don’t own a house yet and military housing ain’t the best
(Sigh) That is the struggle brofessor, I guess realistically whatever route costs less money should be the choice.
