Yeah my truck does the same thing. Sometimes I can be getting gas and go to start the vehicle and the light flashes and beeps and every gear of the tranny is neutral. I had to crawl underneath and hit the actuator with a rubber mallet. I even had all of the contacts cleaned. Worked well for a couple of months. Now it’s pulling the same crap again. Any other ideas? If the actuator will fix it, I’ll spend the 200 dollars. Thanks. Don’t mean to hijack your thread.

From Park, shift to Drive, Then select 4H (while moving), 4H should now engage w/o having to shift to neutral (While still moving @ slow pace) try to select 4L, (4L should be flashing at this time w/o engaging 4L) *NOTE: Some Models will only allow you to select 4L while in Neutral... IDK why*. To complete process (While 4L is flashing) press brakes and then shift to Neutral, let off brakes. You should now engage 4L. Maybe this helps.... or maybe not.

Mine will beep and flash upon startup even though the selector is in two wheel drive. It has some kind of glitch. I don’t know if it is the actuator the rod behind the actuator. I was reading that one guy had to replace his transmission which made no sense to me at all. He never reported back though as to whether that fixed his problem or not. The third gen went with a different transfer case. Thanks though.

You don't have to be in neutral to switch from 2WD to 4-high; you can be moving up to about 25mph and engage/disengage it anytime.

Only mentioned it because maybe if you're dropping into N before 4-high then maybe that's what's causing the issue for some odd reason.

Did you know if someone put the wrong fluid in the transfer case. People have put the same fluid that goes into the differentials into the transfer case.... this could cause the problem you're having. The correct fluid is 75W and some put 75W-90 in the transfer case.

IDK if this will apply to you since you have a 2008.

Here are your specs. I believe this is your truck you have listed:

    @JBSTOY
Looks like the diff and the transfer use the same on a 2008..... Maybe trying a synthetic type fluid will help?

I understand what you’re saying. It usually does it at startup when the transfer case isn’t even being changed at all with the selector in two wheel drive and park.

If you think the Tundra is tough getting in 4LO you certainly don’t want to try Engaging the locker on a Toyota Tacoma Off-Road. On a more serious note just plan on taking your time. I generally put it in 4 high really easy then pop it in neutral and switch to 4 LO. Be patient and wait on it. Sometimes I have to go forwards or back a little bit.

Gotcha. My issue is not putting the truck into 4 lo. The truck tries to put itself in 4 lo even though it hasn’t been selected.

Thanks I’ll check it out. I think that I might have it figured out. It only does it if I am really driving the truck hard. Then the next startup cycle is when it exhibits the issue.

resurrecting an old thread here but i am having your symptoms on my '08 Sequoia. 4hi no issues going in and out, can hardly ever get it into 4lo, just flashing 4lo light, and also i have the 4lo flashing when i start up in the mornings, in 2wd and also have had it happen when left in 4wd overnight.

    did you get it fixed?

    thanks

Assuming you're in neutral when you shift into 4lo and waiting 3 seconds for it to engage, It might be the actuator?

correct, i hear it "try" to do something but it's like it gets cut short. on the rare occasions 4lo does engage, you can hear the actuator motor cycling through which takes a second or 2. otherwise its just a 'click'.

doing as much research as possible before tearing into it. reading plenty of struggles about clocking the gears upon reassembly...

At least there are a lot of dismantlers in your area so you hopefully have quick and easy access to replacement part.
