that entire back piece of the console will pop off as one piece. start at the bottom. once you have it off, you'll be able to pop the socket out and replace. i replaced mine with a blue sea dual USB socket. you can snip the wires off the lighter socket and solder them right onto the blue sea socket.

There's a thread here with step by step instructions. Easy job that won't take more than 30 minutes, and that includes multiple beer breaks .

It's on when the vehicle is on. This is on my 2016, not sure about newer models.
Here is my DIY video in case you want to do the mod. :D

As a general rule domestic vehicles are always on and imports (including locally built import brands) are not.

    A lot in progress!
Any ideas on how to remove the cover on the bench seat? I thought it would pop off easily.. but no go. Meeting lots of resistance.

Hello everyone, has anyone gone to the next step and install a 115 v outlet? The 2018 Tacoma had one and made for a nice addition to camping thanks

I’m trying to find the relay that gives power to this rear port and the one inside the console. Found the one for the dash ports, but it’s not the same fore these. Anyone had any luck? I’m hoping I can bypass the relay to get continuous power. Much easier than having to run a new circuit.
