@csuviper Brian - I think a steroid to deal with inflammation might be warranted here. Dealing with TMD for patients (temporomandibular disorder - usually associated with grinding or clenching teeth/jaws) our first line is NSAIDs and centrally (or peripherally) acting muscle relaxers. Sounds like you’ve been down this road already. Add some hot and cold compress therapy to the affected sites. (Cold, damp washcloth then heat it up a bit). Cold does remarkable things for inflammation. (4 components of inflammation: heat, swelling, redness, pain).

A steroid, medrol dose pack (methyl-prednisolone) is next if 3-4 weeks of religious NSAID therapy isn’t touching it. A different muscle relaxer also on the list.
Next if we suspect any neuro involvement gabapentin can alleviate symptoms.

Typically the cause of these symptoms for my patients is stress or anxiety causing the parafunctional habit (clenching/grinding). “Get rid of the stress” removes the cause. The treatments mentioned above only alleviate symptoms (but will cure if the cause is ceased).

So once again, take the *forum doc* advice (dentist in my case - which is likely horrifically worse) with heaping tablespoons of salt. Follow your treating doc’s therapy. I just want you to have all the info possible at your disposal. Might be worth mentioning to your doc, and asking their opinion. Or not - up you brutha. Just praying for a total recovery for ya.

Yeah I'm in the wrong business. Did they provide an itemized sheet? I'm always amazed at all the little things they charge for and how much each is

Yes they did. 2 MRIs and 3 CTAs at over $5k each. $10k for the transfer to ICU the second day.
Separate bill from the ER dr alone was around $600. Weird it was separated.

Kind of like how you get a bill from the hospital, the dr. and the anesthesiologist. Just when you think it's all over another bill rolls in lol

No worries about ibuprofen and the liver. It's Tylenol (acetaminophen) that effects the liver. Ibuprofen does take a toll on the kidneys if taken for a long time or if kidneys are previously compromised. Ibuprofen can also "thin" the blood, which I think you said your Dr had you on aspirin daily, both ibuprofen and aspirin are NSAID's (non steroidal anti inflammatories) which can be mild blood thinners, aspirin very much more so than Motrin.

I definitely sounds like you have different things going on but all related in some way. The disection absolutely was caused by cervical "adjustments" by chrio, this is scary and unfortunately too common. I can't believe any chiro still does "neck cracking" it's a disaster waiting to happen and many people have died from it. Some porn star did last year iirc.
The mini stoke is likely related to the disection, where the artery disected, it would be very common for blood to pool in that area and because it pools, small clots could form becauee when blood pools it coagulates. To me that all seems related.
The headaches and numbers do sound like some sort of neuralgia that could be totally separate, but possibly residual stroke effects.
Aspirin for blood "thinning" to prevent further clots, NSAID's for inflammation and pain (consider Aleve twice a day over ibuprofen 3-4 times a day, then possibly steroids (prednisone) for inflammation not relieved by NSAID's. Prednisone has shitty side effects but works 100 times better than NSAID's for inflammation. Even a short 5 day "burst" of 60mg daily. I only do burst dosing for my back, the tapering doses/ steroid packs suck IMO, as both a patient and a nurse.
Muscle relaxers could help, as well as something like Neurontin to quiet down the nerve activity. I take Neurontin for my leg pain/numbness from my herniated disk and it does help somewhat for nerve pain. There's other nerve pain meds but tbose scare me and can be addicting and all that.
If you ever have any question or anything feel free to give me a text or call.

I'm frking sick from all the doctor bills. Fortunately most of it has been covered by insurance. Not counting my pills the charges are over $300K. 2 years of Zytiga will be $480K!!! Had my monthly blood work last Friday. Waiting for results....

Ok thought i would give an update since people are asking. Thank you all for being concerned and asking how i am doing.

Went to the neurologist again last Friday. He said the same ol stuff. No definitive anything. He said the dissection should be healed now so the risk of stoke is very small especially since I'm taking aspirin. The flap of interior tissue from the dissection should be shrinking away but unknown until i have my next MRI. Either way i wouldn't be treated any differently according to him. Nothing else they could do but wait. I have the MRI scheduled for September to confirm its healed and flap is gone.

    The statistics are:
    • 10% chance of getting another artery dissection
    • 1% change of getting another stroke

I actually have been feeling alot better since around the week of May 14. Numbness has gone down, really only feel it in my fingers, toes and neck to ear all on the right side. The neck pain and headaches has also gone down alot. Its still there everyday but most the time is more of a discomfort than pain. Pain does increase most days around 3-5pm. Turns into headaches or migraines a few times per week. Much better than the first ~3 weeks out of the hospital where i had to take ibuprofen multiple times per day just to make it tolerable.

I didn't work out at all for about a month after. I then moved to just twice a week of lifting light weight or body weight exercises for more reps at a slow pace. Within the last two weeks i have started to increase the weight as i feel good and more comfortable getting back into it. Dr kinda sorta released me from my 20lb restriction (which i really made ~40 instead). Just said to stay away from high intensity stuff where i could be jerking my neck around.

Just something to look into. I know you don't have distonia but there is a treatment that basically implants a pacemaker type device with wires that run to the affected muscles sending an electrical charge that can keep the muscles from tightening up and causing pain. It has helped quite a few people.

Hope you can get better. Keep fighting and keep those dark storm clouds out of your mind. Best of luck

1 year post hospitalization and I’m feeling great!!!!!

I am very lucky that this wasn’t worse and so very grateful for the amazing support that I had. My wife was right there by my side comforting me and encouraging me. My parents and my wife’s parents stepped up a lot to help out with my boys. My personal trainer kept working with me in the gym finding exercises that I could do with low weight/high reps and lower risk.

Could have been anything that caused it but I am 100% positive myself that it was cause by chiropractic neck manipulation.
