Added a H-Pipe to my TRD dual Exhaust!

I had muffler shop fab and weld a H-pipe on my TRD dual exhaust to help with low end torque and quiet down exhaust drone while towing. I am very pleased with this mod and only paid $100 for this to be done. The idea came from the dual exhaust on my track car which has an H-pipe (and x-pipe) to blend exhaust pulses from cylinder banks to help power and efficiency.

This weekend I towed my trailer up to Austin to pick up my track car and was very impressed with the results of this mod. The exhaust drone while towing is now completely gone, and my transmission was able to stay in 1 gear higher (6th and 5th gear) for most of the trip compared to towing with the unmodified TRD exhaust (5th and 4th gear). Amazingly on some of the hilly sections the transmission was able to pull my 8000 lbs car hauler in 5th and 4th gear without down shifting into 3rd.

The only negative is that this mod will quiet down the exhaust sound quite a bit and removes that TRD exhaust burble which is a characteristic of true dual exhaust. The new sound is somewhat a blend of the factory single exhaust and the unmodified TRD exhaust. I like it however and recommend this mod to anyone wanting to quiet down their TRD exhaust and or tows a heavy trailer on a regular basis.

I had true dual exhaust. I ended up going back to stock. The increase in low end torque was unbelievable after going back to stock, considerable power increase under 2500rpm.

If I didn't go back to stock I would have incorporated an H or X pipe. But I went back to stock for much the same reason that you did this, nice quiet towing. I had my toyhauler hooked up this weekend for the 1st time with the stock exhaust, so much more enjoyable to pull that thing in silence.

 

Same here! I went back and forth about replacing my stock exhaust or keeping the TRD exhaust and doing this mod. Happy I decided to keep it and add the H-pipe. With the mod torque feels about the same as stock if not better, and sound is just a tad bit louder than stock.

Yeah torque loss is noticed when having duals so I went with BA 8 inch and now it's back to normal if not better

That's great! I believe BA Mufflers uses an X-pipe which increases flow and power in higher RPM's.

Thanks for the post. I've been wanting to do this, just haven't had the time. Now that you say it's quieter, I'm not sure how interested I am as the TRD exhaust could be a bit louder, IMO. Having said that, the duals have killed my torque so it might be time to offload it and get a BA setup.

 

Yes, it does make it a bit quieter but for me that's ok. IMO Toyota should have gone with a dual 8" canister with H-pipe set up. This would have saved some weight, added more sound and more importantly not sacrifice low end torque.

 

I’ve heard Duals are beneficial if you have headers, other wise you lose power with them while using the stock manifolds.

 

Up top it rips, mine just lost a lot of torque down low.

 

kudos to OP for seeking a civilized set up. this is a rare breed. "cool exhausts" belong on sports cars and race cars... not boring DD pickup trucks... or any DD really. I salute this guy.

I have this picture on my phone and plan to have this done once I find a decent muffler shop in my area. I too thought about going back to the stock exhaust but being supercharged I'm not too concerned about loss of a little bit of low end torque.

 

My research revealed the same results, a true dual exhaust is best suited to these engines if you also have LT headers. I wanted an exhaust that flowed better than stock, but I didn't want to replace my exhaust manifolds and I definitely didn't want a loud & obnoxious exhaust. Dirty Deeds came up with a Frankenstein system that utilizes a left and right muffler followed by a Y pipe followed by a 3rd muffler exiting a single tail pipe with resonator. Excellent sounds without being loud & obnoxious, and a noticeable boost in low and top end power.

 

Just curious as I'm new to exhaust on these trucks (mostly dealt with 4 cylinder turbo cars). Does long tube headers imply that it's replacing the cat pipe section also?
