My in-laws have an old aluminum grill that has seen its better days. I decided I would build them something that would last them the rest of thier lives and would cook anything they wanted.

My father in-law had mentioned he wished he had something that he could use as a smoker or just use as a charcoal grill. So I've set out to build him one.

I looked for a propane tank big enough for what I wanted, but couldn't find one that was inexpensive. So... I had some 3/16 and 11 guage plate laying out in the shop.

Let me say, I have never made a smoker or grill, so this little design I've been working on is all new for me. I just know I wanted to make something big enough to cook for the whole family and that would last.

    My cook chamber dimensions are 20" H x 20" W x 36" L

The firebox will be insulated and I'm in debate on making it a reverse flow or an offset smoker.

I'll also make a charcoal rack for the cook chamber that can be removed when they decide to use it as a smoker.

My eyes feel like they might crack out of my head from all the reading I've done with how these things work.

I've tacked everything together so it won't warp when I weld the box. The lid, except for a piece on each side is 11 gauge to cut down on weight and the rest of the box is 3/16.

If anyone has ideas or suggestions, I'm open to them!

    My 2 cents. :D

Make sure you have a legit set-up to control temps, however you decide to control airflow. Good temp gage, solid handles, good hinges, maybe these things are obvious... just trying to help out.

It looks like this may be heavy so make sure you can transport it without a major PIA. mmmm Pork...

I like my butts with thick bark.
