Have a new 2018 Tundra Crew Max with a need for a tonneau cover. Just installed Line X bed liner. Looking for advice on a hard folding panel cover (Extang) vs a hard retractable cover (Retrax). Has the 5.5 foot bed. Need to travel with it partially open due to dog crate, but also need to store cargo out of weather. I like the option of being able to lock the retractable cover in any position (have better protection for cargo in front of bed from weather when open due to this feature) , but the canister takes up 13'' of the bed. The panel option takes up no room (can lock it up against your back window), but when open can only lock it with 3 out of the 4 panels stacked or up against the window when open. Less coverage from weather. Can't find any options where the the 3-4 panels can be locked open in any folded position for travel.
    All opinions/ideas welcome.

Retraxpro doesn’t lock. It “tightens” but doesn’t lock unless fully closed.

Truckcovers USA is a nice cover I saw when in San Diego. I believe it locks every 12”. May want to double check that info. Small canister. 100% worth looking into.

Google is your friend when researching covers and dog crates.

    Good luck

From the sounds of your needs I think that the Retrax is the best fit. Yeah it sucks losing the room that the canister takes up but it is nice to be able to lock it where you want it and although minimal, you would still have some room under the canister. Retrax, the MX Pro in particular, make excellent covers. If you go folding, take a look at the Extang Solid Fold 2.0. It's a tri-fold and will at least keep the front third of your bed covered when folded up. It's also quick and easy to remove when you need the whole bed open.

I have a pace edwards retractable cover and the canister takes up about 12" but it has never been an issue. Most of the canisters (PE included) are plastic so I am always careful loading things against it. The Truck Covers USA canister is the smallest - about 9" I think - and it is metal. Both the PE and TC USA have the option of adding tracks so you can add racks and carry things above the bed.

Thanks for the info! Looking into all suggestions! I do like the option of being able to mount things on top of the cover. Any additional input would be much appreciated.

How big is your dog's kennel? I had a soft rollup tonneau for the longest, and i had a tough time putting my dog in the bed exposed to the sun etc. I recently got a soft topper, and now the kennel fits in my bed with shade cover and plenty of air movement (sides and front and rear "windows" can roll up). right around the price range of a retractable cover, but gives you more storage space. Only disadvantage is that some one can cut through the canvas if they REALLY want to.

What is everyone's feelings on the OE tri fold tonneau? I'm working with a guy on one as we speak?

I have the Extang solid fold 2.0 and I like it. Isn't 100% waterproof (but I live in SoCal so its not bothersome), and you can lock it open on the last panel. Installation was pretty easy and didn't require relocation of the tracks.

I have the trifold, installed when I bought my crew Max. Seems to work well , but some complaints of leaks. I have not experienced leaks yet, but it has only been a few weeks. BakFlip G2 was the maker.

The BakFlip G2 appears to be able to be opened and driven with 1 - 3 sections open. Looks pretty versatile. I'm leaning towards it as well because it mounts inside the bed rails and would allow me to install a Thule TracRac SR too.

I have the Retrax cover, and love it. My canister is metal but it's fairly thin so have to be careful slamming thing against it. I've carried quads in the bed where the canister is in the way, but it's not like I could get the tailgate closed without the canister. Some people I've known with similar covers put bundles of wood or some type on stopper in front of the wheels to ensure they didn't smash into the canister. Really like how I can lock it at any point, I've carried bikes in the bed and didn't mind leaving the truck unattended for a while as I only had 3-5" of the bed open to let the handlebars stick up. Cover was easily used in the winter, just took some ice smashing a few times to allow the cover to roll up. I'd say it's 99% waterproof, I could see water seeping in where the tailgate meets the bedside but I've never had puddles of water when it was closed.

When open all the way does, driving down the road does it vibrate and rub against the cab/paint or back glass any?

None yet but plenty to come.

As someone who has sold Pace and Retrax, the Retrax holds up better with weather conditions. Yes they take up some space but has best combo of what you describe. Bak MX4 and Undercover Flex are great covers, but Agri Cover also offers a new cover called Lomax https://www.agricover.com/hard-tonn...MI1MKzlv7B2gIVVODICh2fBw6sEAAYASAAEgJf4_D_BwE

I know someone who could get you competitive price too if you want.

Hope this helps but I was never a fan, personally, of Extang products. Just my 2 cents...

Might consider a cap vs a tonneau. Not sure how much protection you’d have while partially open other than from the sun. Seems like water and dust would blow right in.

I have a Gatortrax MX and love it. I had it on the last Ford I just traded and it was the first thing I purchased. I would upload a photo but not sure how.

    Thanks, Wes

I have a Diamond back with the tool box. I fold the rear half back and the puppies crate fits in the back half of the bed.

I have the BakFlip on my Honda Ridgeline. Its ok, but doesn't compare the the Diamondback.

I ordered a bakflip g2, should be here today, probably put it on this weekend, family trip next weekend with stroller and luggage will let y'all know how I like it. Thanks for all the input. That Lomax looks awesome, but wanted the last fold up feather to use whole bed.

did yours come with a rail system? or do you need bed rails from the start? I have a good deal on a retrax, but trying to figure out the rails situation

My truck came with the rail system. By the Retrax website it can fit the bed with or without rails. Installation was fairly easy, would have been super easy with 2 people but made a little table from the box to make it simpler for doing it myself. For the side rails of the Retrax cover itself I got it without the cutouts for the stake pocket.
