there's absolutely nothing you need to be sorry for. i am, and have been, in desperate need of a change. i cannot continue staying stuck/trapped where i am. i know it. bec knows it. the kids know it. would this be easier if my father had left me something, totally. we're still going to figure out a way to make it work.

for years, people have asked me why i'm in industrial automation as a job. the people that knew me as a scuba instructor and divemaster, always wanted to know why i wasn't a full time first responder. many years ago, before she died, my father's sister told me i should have been a paramedic.

at some point, you've got to take stock and see how things are adding up. change is good. change is necessary.

Do what you need to do for you and your family to be happy. That's all you can do. I know it's cliche, but control what you can and F the rest.

thanks but like i just said, it isn't bad news. does it suck? sure does. does it leave me completely baffled? you bet. the shittiest part is that the lawyer's cover letter implied that it was my fault i was disinherited. but, he's dead. i'm alive. my wife and daughters are alive. it's time to fix me. time to crawl out of this hole that he had pounded me into for 45 years.

I need to go buy a laptop and some music stuff. After that, our old neighbor is having a bday party so we’ll probably head over there.

Any recommendations on laptops? I’m too cheap to go Mac.

I'm using a MacBook Air. I've had other laptops and they seem to pile out after a couple of years.

Not familiar with RMI, but know of others like them. From the NPS side, a FR or EMT will help you get a job, but with the exceptions of the huge parks, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Teton, and a couple of others, it’s at most a collateral duty that you’d do in addition to whatever other duties you can land a position doing. Those huge parks will hire medics (typically paramedic or AEMT), but usually only seasonally - 6mo of work/year, limited benefits.

Companies like Garmin and Spot communicate with local Fire/EMS/LE dispatches to use local resources for rescues (at least that’s how it works in western CO and in the lower 48, at least). Many times it’s county sar teams (typically under the sheriff’s dept), federal land management staff, or local EMS that is doing the work on those rescues.

A great deal of experience and training can be gained by volunteering for local fire, SAR, or EMS agencies (or volunteering for NPS, even.) I know that doesn’t pay the bills, but it can expose someone looking to get i to the field to professionals working that field, provide a ton of [very expensive] training, give them experience beyond the classroom and scenarios, and help find a more specific path to reach the goal they have in mind.

I’m hopeful this helps. Good luck.
