I guess Car and Driver hates Tundra

Working on a plan to wire my ARB compressor only. No lockers, what mods to the ARB loom do I need to do? What wires can I delete. Wiring to a toggle once under the hood, non illuminated. Plus need to extend the battery leads. Solder, splice block or what?

 

What the hell is wrong with having a traditional key instead of push-button start?!?!

 

The only newfangled thing in my Tacoma is the stereo system! I've got A/C, intermittent wipers, and a backup camera. I've also added intermittent wipers, but I still start my truck with a key and manually roll down my windows down with pride!

 

Toyota is not glamorous, not a lot of common bells and whistles and those things score points. The Tundra is a workhorse, and will statistically last much longer than the others. I’m happy with my purchase.

I take everything Car and driver and road n track write with a grain of salt. The more gidgets and tech a vehicle has, the more they seem say how great a vehicle is. They fall all over themselves for vehicles like BMW’s. Yet every person I know that’s ever owned one has had numerous issues with them. Very rarely do they mention anything about long term reliability.

 

Amen! Nothing wrong with a rotary phone either. LOL

 

I'm not gonna lie...

I have never used, nor do I know how to use, a rotary phone!

 

I do wish they'd put futhermucking variable intermittent windshield wipers in the Tacoma though! Lucky for me, installing intermittent wipers in my 2nd Gen Taco RC was easy!

 

And why is that? Because long-term reliability is not what drives the mainstream automotive industry. Money is. Breakdowns = more money in parts sales and dealer servicing.

 

My dad's '02 BMW 325Ci convertible wasn't bad at all. He bought it used from the original owner (his brother) in 2006 and had it until 2008. The car was great in just about every way, but just routine maintenance was damn pricey, and that's why he sold it!

 

I still remember driving my ‘06 Tacoma home the day I bought it. A light rain shower started, immediatly after that a WTF, is this 1980?

It has to cost them more to build both wiper stocks and track which truck gets which instead of putting intermittant stocks in all of them.

 

Coming from a 2017 F150 a few months ago, I have to say everything they said was spot on. The ford is much more adnvanced when it comes to tech but unfortunately it’s a pile of junk otherwise. This is my experience at least which is why I ended up in a tundra after only 7,000 miles of an f150.

 

Did you have an Ecoboom, I mean, uh...Ecoboost, engine?

 

Yes I did. First I had the buttons on the steering wheel need replaced after 1 week. Then the vacuum system on the 4x4 needed the drivers leg replaced at week 3. On week 9 I was driving to work and lost a significant amount of power and had Xmas lights on the dash. Both I repeat BOTH turbos failed and they had to pull turbos from a truck on the lot to put on mine. I drove straight from the dealer to Toyota after that.

Well it's not entirely wrong....

Put away the pitch forks and hear me out first.

I was in Baja last week for a race and got to ride around in a first and second generation Raptor. The first gen was for a taco run and I wasn't in it for long. It was a crew cab and for my 6'2" frame I fit in fairly well.

The next day I spent a large part of the day riding around in a 2018 Raptor crew cab. Granted this truck cost $25k more than my '16 Tundra but it is really nice inside. The seats have A/C/ There's 4 cameras on it giving you 360 degrees on the dashboard monitor when backing up. It was getting better mileage than my truck. There was enough leg room in the back for my buddy who is 6'6". The engine made plenty of power for pulling the enclosed trailer that had a UTV in it. The one problem with it was that it's all aluminum and fiberglass. Why is that a problem for a truck used the chase in Baja? There's no way to mount the CB radio antenna that's on a magnet.

While the Raptor is a really nice truck I'd still take my Tundra. Turbos belong on diesels and F1 cars.

But Toyota has some catching up to do. They better do their homework before releasing a 4 gen truck on the same frame, suspension and power plant as the current models.


Also, C&D really kisses the ass of the manufactures who advertise in the magazine and on their site.

 

Ford needs to build a Powerstroke Diesel Raptor!

 

Not sure about that....my bmw and wife’s Porsche are rock solid. German engineering is good. Nothing is flawless but Toyota vs the big 3 in the US and I’ll stick with my Yota

I don’t ever recall seeing a Tundra commercial or ad.

 

My main reason for not getting an avalanche is the electronics. They looked too much like the Cadillac I had gotten out of prior to my Honda... I love the look but those sensors and lights will kill a car and a wallet.
