Nice! Contgats on your new Mac! I think that you will really like this. If you want to use part of the external drive for backup you can partition it so that your backup date is kept separate from your other data.

I work for a company that makes back up software and too often I hear stories of people loosing all of their work and personal data. Hopefully you will never need your backup but knowing that it is there is good.

    What's the old saying...

There are two types of people: those who back up their files, and those who haven't experienced losing all their files yet

PC or MAC? For an average Joe who primarily uses it for porn surfing, a regular PC would do the trick. No need to fork up extra cash for a MAC. :D

Now the you have spent the money, THEY ALL SUCK!!!
I use PCs for work which include a Windows 10 Lenovo laptop, Windows 8  Panasonic ToughTab, and a Windows 7 Dell laptop.

My personal computers consist of an old Windows 7 HP All-in-one, a Windows 7 HP Slate tablet , an iMac, and a MacBook Pro. Until something better comes along, I will stick with the Apples.
There are a few integration issues with third party products and every now and then Apple will update software and screw up my MacBook's ability to display on a monitor until they come up with a patch, but all in all I am happy.
The 2015 MacBook Pro (Retina) has 512GB HD, I7 processor and 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3. I have a 256GB memory card, and a 3 TB hard drive to store crap on.
I have been to the ends of the internet and seen everything without paying for antivirus or having any issues........so far. :bananadance:

Macs are less susceptible to viruses so with a mac you would be able to see more porn before having to disinfect. :)

Best decision ever, you won’t regret it I prefer to stay away from Windows, my choices MacOS, Linux period, the only windows computers I’m forced to use stays at my work, but is a good idea to have windows in your Mac too just in case that’s why I have Parallels.

o_O We can do wonders in Mac just with the Terminal commands, I’m just saying not want to offend anyone here but not everyone in the forum use our computers only for YouTube or fakebook, plenty of people doing productive stuff.

Honestly, if you're just mostly sending email, browsing, uploading photos, etc., you'll be fine with a sub-$1k laptop from Best Buy or Costco. Costco usually has solid deals and you usually get a longer warranty.

Everyone loves Apple and they have great computers, but all the Windows hate is very misguided. I have Windows 10 on my gaming rig and it's very snappy. My wife's sister and her husband are Apple lovers, but they have had far more hardware issues with their MacBooks than I ever had with my old Toshiba Windows laptop. The components are all essentially the same stuff between Mac and Windows, so you're just paying more for the fancy case/body, screen, and Mac OS. If Macs are your thing and you like the OS better then go for it, but I wouldn't switch to Mac just because. Again, Apple makes great stuff but the "Apple is way better than Windows" mentality is usually from fanboys or misguided individuals who drank the Kool-aid.

    Let me dispel some myths:

1: Mac is not less susceptible to viruses than Windows. Less viruses are written for Mac, but Symantec year after year describes Mac as having more security threats and vulnerabilities than Windows. Mac isn't as secure, but more people attack Windows because that's where the market is.

2: Mac doesn't exclusively use solid state for everything. Some Windows laptops do this as well.

3: If you spend $3000 on a Windows laptop, it will be better from a hardware perspective than the equivalent priced Mac. It will last just as long too if you don't treat it like shit. Same goes for spending $1600 on a PC. In fact, a $1600 PC will be more hardware-capable (and therefor more software capable) than a Mac @ 150% or more of the same price.

4: Networking is easier and more secure in a Windows environment.

5: Mac is consistently behind the flagship hardware and software that is released for PC. Apple in general copies available tech and markets it as new and innovative.

6: Windows employs some of the greatest minds on the planet to fight those who write programs attacking PC users. Their responses are always quick and effective. Mac is much slower to close security holes and eliminate threats.

7: If you're not downloading tranny porn and warez you probably don't have to worry about viruses anyway.

I also work for a company that develops world-class software that does some pretty amazing stuff. Our developers typically use powerful Windows PCs. Our R&D teams and mechanical engineers typically use Windows PCs. It's our hipster sales people and project managers that use Apple. Also my wife's parents because they want to be "hip."

I am comfortable in Linux/Unix/Windows/Mac/Arduino/Commodore 64. I prefer a Windows PC for it's utility, ease of use, ability to customize, better support and security, etc.

I do love going into a Starbucks and seeing the old guy with the Mac trying desperately to be noticed by the hot barista while he pretends to do something important on his laptop, when in reality he couldn't do something as simple as set up a NAS system or a even a basic local network!

This is pretty much spot on. If someone ends up with a virus it's either from downloading/viewing porn or using a torrent to illegally download media files 99% of the time.

You're correct. Mac uses PC hardware nowadays.

You're also correct that you're paying for the image, not necessarily any improved performance or security. If you prefer Mac because it just resonates with you, that's fine - but to make inaccurate claims about viruses and/or capability is just not honest or is ill-informed.

    @T-Rex266

My company used to use Dell computers. My old Dell e6440 is over 5 years old, and works like a dream. I replaced the battery and D key about a year ago before wiping it and giving it to my daughter (my company allowed me to keep it when I got a new work laptop because there was no point in them keeping it.)

She uses it for photo editing, recording and editing music, research and reports, and everything else you'd expect a 16 year old girl to use a laptop for.

We now use HP laptops. Any HP, Dell, Asus, etc laptop will be great if you don't get a bottom of the line laptop. If you're not gaming or drawing CAD you can get away with integrated graphics and less memory. The "must-haves," in my opinion, would be a 7th or 8th gen i5 or i7, 16gb DDR4 memory or greater, and 500gb or more solid state storage. A laptop with these minimum specs will be burning fast for what you say you're using it for.

Check out the Dell XPS 15-9560. Look at the one in the $1600 range. It brings far more to the table from a performance and hardware perspective than the current Mac Book Pro, which starts at $1800 I think.

Buying a Mac over a PC is like buying an F-150 over a Tundra. It costs more, does less, but it will make you pretty popular with a certain demographic.
