i have a chip in the front fender of my new truck. The touch up didn’t really fix it as the chip is really flat. The dealer will paint it for me but tried to scare me about the risks of a respray. I understand it can affect the resale, etc but anyone have first hand experience?

Unless its really big I wouldn't have it resprayed. Small chips can be repaired with touch up paint, let it dry really well then, touchup again building up the layers until it is a little thicker than the surrounding paint. Then use a very fine rubbing compound to bring it back to level. this will take awhile and a lot of elbo grease to finish. but it can be done. use the touchup paint with the little brush, not the spray kind.

The dealer tried to touch it up. It is too shallow. The paint is so thin it shows the black through the white and still is a blob...

I mistyped earlier. The dealer will paint it for free as I bought I like that.

This is a brand new Truck that came with paint damage? I'd absolutely have the dealer fix it for free. Respray or whatever they have to do

How big is the chip? If its nothing crazy I would hit with touch up paint and let it eat. If your driving the truck on the road its going to happen again. I used to be super crazy about trying to keep rock chips to a minimum but its nearly impossible to avoid. If you have the fender re-sprayed you risk having the whole panel not match the rest of truck.

Well that’s the question. Has anyone actually had it done? The chip repair looks like crap. You it isn’t even white (the color of my truck).

The debate is do I live with a really bad chip repair or get it painted.

Your truck was brand new and had a paint chip? And they admitted that? And offered to fix it for free?
This should be fixed by the dealer, however they need to do it. If the repair doesn't match then they need to fix that and make it right.
It sounds to me the dealer doesn't wanna do the work and are making excuses not to do so.

I didn't realize this was a brand new truck and bought this way. I agree with Pudge, the dealer should fix this if he has to paint the whole truck.

Yeah they are fixing but was just curious if anyone had gone through a panel respray and had any feedback. Thanks all!

I had my tailgate repainted...well a portion of it. Long story short trailer jumped off the ball when I went to load my quad. Slammed into the tailgate three times. They fixed the dents, prepped and painted the area around the tailgate handle. They did a great job and you can’t tell it was ever done except where they hit the plastic piece with the buffer.
I think the only way it would hurt your resale value is if they report the pAint work. Mine wasn’t so it will never show up on a carfax.
Edit: my truck was 2 years old when it was painted.

When I bought my last vehicle, a Yukon, there was a paint chip on the bumper. Dealer repainted the bumper before delivery and no issues. A few years later the dealer service dept put a big scrape in the driver door. They repainted the entire door and the only issue was that they used the paint code and did not bother to actually match the 4 year old paint. Had them repainted the door again and no issues.

What is your concern with having the panel resprayed? People have their cars painted all the time. Usually body shops offer a lifetime guarantee on their work too.

Your concern will be when they paint it , that they should be blending the color with basecoat....then clearcoating the entire fender....which the clearcoat can "YELLOW" the fender slightly ....this is caused by the hardener that is used in the clear. ....painted a LOT of cars ....27 years as an Autobody painter .....where is the chip on the fender ????

Concern is that the fender won't match and it will go down a rabbit hole of issues. Trying to weigh with living with a crap chip repair or take the chance on a respray.

The chip is sort of in the middle of the fender near closer to the tire.

The way I understand it, for it to be factory warrantied, the piece has to be removed, painted and clear coated. If it doesn't match, make them do it over again.

This from a shop that does dealer warranty work.

She is done, need to go pick her up. Fingers crossed it looks good. They say the color match is on point. We shall see...

Picked it up. It looks pretty good to me. I can't tell if there is a slight difference between the fender and the plastic piece under the headlight, the gap between the two panels is so much closer than every other piece). There is no difference to the door and hood that's for sure. I think I am just looking to find an issue, so I am going to be fat dumb and happy and move on!
